Supplemental Security Income Recipients, Act Now – Go to IRS.gov – A Message from Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who don’t file tax returns will start receiving their automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department in early May. People receiving SSI benefits who did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes, and have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should immediately go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Information section to provide their information. SSI recipients who have dependent children and did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes need to act by Tuesday, May 5, in order to receive additional payments for their eligible children quickly. 

By taking this proactive step to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If people in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, their payment at this time will be $1,200 only. They would then be required to file a tax year 2020 tax return to obtain the additional $500 per eligible child.

I urge SSI recipients with qualifying children and who do not normally file taxes to take action now. Immediately go to IRS.gov so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for.

Lastly, a word of caution. Be aware of scams related to the Economic Impact Payments. There is no fee required to receive these payments. Don’t be fooled.

Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Treasury anticipates these payments to go out to Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries starting around the end of April and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients starting in early May.       I used a desktop computer. I tried for a week on my phone and it won’t let me. So I used my aunt’s desktop computer. Try that.

    When I went to get my payment,it told me there was an error they didn’t have my information. I get social security and I work ( I ‘m on furlong now) I’ve paid my taxes for 2018,2019.What am I doing wrong

    I get ssi but i filed a 2019 tax return ,under self employed. But now i have to send in my information for id verification. So my taxes are not being processed? . does this mean i won’t get my stimulus check until they process my return? Or would i still get it regardless but i get ssi?

    I have custody of my 14yr old grandson he gets ss from his mother. I get ss also. I have went on the irs filer page and it tells me my dependent ss#is wrong i have double checked and it is right.Will i get the 500. automatically for him since he gets ss

    Did mine Wednesday, my check hasn’t come yet. I am glad it was extended because it was a short notice. I got lucky to find this out but far to many have no idea. I recieve SS Retirement & raising a grandchild. I’m high risk, live in rural area & a brokedown car, so I can’t get to computer, only have phone. Luckily I have family who helped, because the last step is not visible on android. So I’m concerned for seniors, disabled etc who only have phone & live in a rural area or no tech help etc. They have no computer access. With librarys closed etc. This is a disadvantage for them. Hope it’s possible to have an android setting to help them. Otherwise it was easy. A previous IRS employee.
