woman sitting on a laptopWe’re always looking for ways to provide you with innovative, quality services, and with our newest online enhancement, we’re proud to be doing just that. Now, if you meet certain requirements, you can file Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and disability applications online at the same time.

You can apply online if you:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 65.
  • Have never been married.
  • Are a U.S. citizen residing in one of the fifty states, District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
  • Haven’t applied for or received disability or SSI benefits in the past.

If you started another application online before April 1, but haven’t submitted it, you can take advantage of this new service option and submit a disability and SSI application together.

With this update, we are expanding service to customers with limited English proficiency by allowing them to request an appointment online for an in-person claim or teleclaim in the language of their choice.  As we provide this new service in many languages, including Spanish, we are discontinuing the separate Spanish language iClaim option.  Applicants who started and saved an iClaim in Spanish can still enter the portal and complete it for up to six months after the claim start date.

With disability, and now SSI, benefit applications online, we’re providing easier and more convenient services to support you through life’s journey.

Typically, the length of time it takes to receive a decision on your reconsideration is about 60 days. However, the amount of time could vary from case-to-case. We reevaluate all evidence, plus any additional evidence submitted and make a new decision. For more specific information about your case, please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the week. Thanks!

I have applied for social security disability on 5/23/2016, and was denied ? They said in the letter they sent me in the mail that the reason I was denied was because I did not have enough work credits. I had a low immune system problem for years ? and i have got it up enough in the last view years to go out in public. But I have been battling depression and anxiety issues, Stress and Irritable bowel syndrome to the point my doctor put me on depression meds ? I don’t want to take advantage of the government. I just need help ? Because i am starting a online business, because i can’t get out and work do to my Irritable Bowel syndrome and my anxiety. I have never worked out in the public before. And i don’t think i can ever ? I was wondering if there is any help i can get ? My stomach gives me so much problems and i can never tell when i will need to get to a restroom ? and i can’t really be left alone at a cash register if i worked out ? do to bathroom breaks and I just can’t concentrate when i get sick and cramped up on my stomach and in the bathroom for long periods of a time ? I don’t think i could be that reliable. so please if i can be helped in anyway please let me know.

    • Ray F.

Hi Wanda. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is a needs based program that pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. To see if you qualify for SSI benefits now, please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 and speak to one of our agents. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. or contact your local Social Security office directly. In some cases, your state may help you pay for Medicare premiums. You may also qualify for Extra Help to pay for your Medicare prescription drug coverage. We hope this information helps.

I am concerned about the information local offices are giving those applying for disability. They are telling everyone they can apply for SSI online. This is not true. Only a minuscule percentage of people can do this.

just apply dor dissability..this covers ssi….

We pay disability benefits through two programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The SSI program is a needs-based program that pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. SSI benefits also are payable to people 65 and older without disabilities, who meet the financial limits. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, on the other hand, are based on earnings and are not subject to income and resource limits. In some cases, you can file an application on online for both programs. Please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 and speak to one of our agents to confirm. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Generally, you’ll have a shorter wait time if you call later in the week. Thanks!
