woman sitting on a laptopWe’re always looking for ways to provide you with innovative, quality services, and with our newest online enhancement, we’re proud to be doing just that. Now, if you meet certain requirements, you can file Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and disability applications online at the same time.

You can apply online if you:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 65.
  • Have never been married.
  • Are a U.S. citizen residing in one of the fifty states, District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
  • Haven’t applied for or received disability or SSI benefits in the past.

If you started another application online before April 1, but haven’t submitted it, you can take advantage of this new service option and submit a disability and SSI application together.

With this update, we are expanding service to customers with limited English proficiency by allowing them to request an appointment online for an in-person claim or teleclaim in the language of their choice.  As we provide this new service in many languages, including Spanish, we are discontinuing the separate Spanish language iClaim option.  Applicants who started and saved an iClaim in Spanish can still enter the portal and complete it for up to six months after the claim start date.

With disability, and now SSI, benefit applications online, we’re providing easier and more convenient services to support you through life’s journey.

Hi Chandra, thanks for using our blog. Hi Chandra, thanks for using our blog. We pay disability benefits through two programs: the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program and the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program. SSI is a needs-based program that provides cash assistance to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. Also, SSI benefits are payable to people 65 and older without disabilities, who meet the financial limits.

When it comes to qualifying for disability benefits under the Social Security Disability Income, or SSDI program, individuals must have worked long enough–and recently enough–under Social Security to qualify for disability benefits. Generally, you need 40 credits, 20 of which you have to earn within the last 10 years before you become disabled.

If you have specific questions about your situation, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

I lived in the States for 10 years, had my daughters there. And always worked in nursing homes. I hurt my back very bad a couple of times, the last time I worked in Santa Clara in retirement for nuns, I hurt my back very badly there,so I came back home. I had 2 back surgeries,a few weeks ago I fell backwards and messed my surgeries. I’m 71 years old now. The dr said there’s nothing to be done, because it would be a delicate and long surgery and he told me not to do it. So I needed to go to a pain Clinic, and I ‘am going twice a month. My question is : Can I get help? I do get my late husband retirement, but that’s not enough! Thank you

    • Sue

Happy new year, Helena, and thank you for using our blog. Once a person reaches full retirement age (yours is 66) and is receiving Social Security retirement or survivors benefits, they are no longer eligible for disability benefits. However, you may want to call your local Social Security office to see if you qualify for our needs-based programs, Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs and/or Supplemental Security Income for the Aged. You can use our Office Locator to find the phone number. Please be patient as our call volume and wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information is helpful.

I am age 70 1/2 and currently get a small SS benefit check monthly. I pay market price for my dwelling plus utilities. How can I apply for SSI with offices being closed due to the COVID?

  5. Marie H.

I am 65 and have no income or disability. I was told I may be eligible for SSI. Because of COVID-19 the local SSA office has been closed since March. Can I apply for just SSI only (no disability) online. If not how do I do it since office is closed.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Marie, thanks for using our blog. To get SSI, you must be disabled, blind, or at least 65 years old and have “limited” income and resources. Check out our Understanding SSI web page for details.

If you have additional questions or would like to apply, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator . The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Would a child who is diagnosed as having ADHD qualify for SSI Disability?

    • Vonda V.

Thanks for your question, Barbara. Social Security pays to children if they have a medical condition or combination of conditions that meets Social Security’s definition of disability for children. You may find our listing of impairments – childhood listings useful. We hope this helps.
