Kate LangThe COVID-19 pandemic has forced Social Security to limit in-person appointments to critical situations only. This led to a sharp decrease in the number of people applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. SSI provides monthly payments to people with low income and few resources who can no longer work due to age or disability.

Many of these individuals—especially older adults and those with limited English proficiency—rely on in-person meetings to get the help they need. Social Security stands ready to assist these groups with online and telephone services. Older adults wanting to apply for SSI payments must call the national 800 number (800-772-1213).  Those who are deaf or hard of hearing can call TTY 800-325-0778. Anyone can contact a local Social Security office to request an appointment. Social Security also provides free interpreter services in more than 150 languages.

At the end of 2020, Social Security began an outreach program for people currently receiving Social Security benefits who could potentially be eligible for additional payments through SSI. These individuals receive letters from Social Security to notify them of their potential eligibility. The letter provides a phone number people can call for possible SSI eligibility screening.

Social Security has also recently released on its web page additional Information for People Helping Others to apply for SSI or disability benefits. With these resources, more representatives from non-profits, health care organizations, and state and local governments can work with Social Security to serve those in need during these unprecedented times.

I sincerely don’t understand being a legislative case, TERI (terminally ill) had submitted an urgency report a year ago to financial hardship and a suicide attempt. Being 32 with a year old and husband- being high risk. Should ethically wait for benefits since March 2019. I would certainly work if that’s an option. But to be reckless with the young populations because “I went to college” of course this isn’t what I hoped for ever. Now during a pandemic we couldn’t get basic needs. And the ssdi and it’s financial repercussions it had on us, took from everything we ever had, savings accounts for our child. But I have earned income credits- a legal representation and legislative representation. What am I missing. Seems as I’m as my end of life appointment for palliative care. I can’t for the life of me get any communication or support from this agency. This is social injustice to the ones who go try to do the right thing, and met with something uncontrollable 1 in a pandemic and my mental health lapse/ I just was not relevant as a human. People have zero insight that at my age – filling for ssdi isn’t a reasonable option – your family financials mental and Ohhhh health deteriorates and this is the hardest population to get basic human rights.

    Hello,
I DESPERATELY need SSI as my monthly SS amount forces me to be without basic life necessities. I can no longer borrow from people! I don’t have a computer, internet access or a car. And, i don’t have money for a taxi to my local Social Security office. (As a matter of fact, i Literally have 10 cents until my next June 3rd SS payment!) Is there Any way someone from Social Security could help me via the telephone?

    • Vonda

Hi Omega. If you have low income and limited resources, you may be able to receive SSI in addition to monthly Social Security benefits. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is a needs-based program that pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. SSI benefits also are payable to people 65 and older without disabilities, who meet the financial limits.

To inquire on potential SSI benefits, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.
