Social Security Launches New Campaign to Fight Scammers

" "Recently, we launched a new Public Service Announcement campaign as our latest step to caution you about the ongoing nationwide telephone impersonation scheme. The videos feature a message from our Commissioner, Andrew Saul. Along with our Office of the Inspector General, we continue to receive reports about fraudulent phone calls and emails from people falsely claiming they’re government employees. The scammers play on emotions like fear to convince people to provide personal information or money in cash, wire transfers, or gift cards. Fraudsters are also emailing fake documents in attempts to get people to comply with their demands.

“I want every American to know that if a suspicious caller states there is a problem with their Social Security number or account, they should hang up and never give the caller money or personal information. People should then go online to report the scam call to Social Security,” said Commissioner Saul.

Commissioner Saul also addressed the Senate’s Special Committee on Aging on  January 29. He spoke frankly about these ongoing schemes and how we are educating the public about them.

You can watch the hearing or read the transcript at www.aging.senate.gov/hearings/thats-not-the-government-calling-protecting-seniors-from-the-social-security-impersonation-scam.

Learn to protect yourself and report any suspicious calls and emails right away. If you have already been a victim of one of these scams, do not be embarrassed, and please report it so we can stop these scammers and protect other people. Please share our new Public Service Announcement video with your family and friends.

  1. It makes no sense why the post office is giving out personal information, then replacing our medicare number, then say stay safe after all that , but worry about people getting scammed, Seems like your working backwards already, but I wish you luck….

    • I can’t figure out where to write my question but if my kids draw a check from their deceased dad but also get claimed on taxes where is their check going? The state card from their dad or my income tax card?

  2. You cannot do anything with these foreign-based scammers until you force the telephone companies to stop caller ID spoofers and foreign callers who make thousands of calls per minute. Make them stop those calls at our boarder! The technology exists to locate these thieves on foreign soil and insist their home country prosecute them and/or extradite them here to stand trial. I’d guess 90% of these scammers or not U.S. based.

  3. Ss need to ban everywhere asking ss # to pass identification even include asking for the last 4 digit of ss#. Ss like medicare need to change all ss #.

  4. I agree 💯 but they had everything that had a number on it and even my driver’s license Credit cards and loved into my bank account to tell me what I had and said he was a SSN# Employee. I lost $600,000 dollars before I realized that I was being SCAMMED.

  5. Every once of protection is paramount, in order to maximize the effort, save budget funds, and reduce the possibility of mail theft, it seems sensible to allow individuals to print the annual W2 forms via the blog.
It is imperative to stay ahead of the criminal elements that corrode progress.
    Move within the 21st century!

    • good for u gloria. i get these calls about ss all the time. i listen to the message they leave and than i block the number.

  6. Thank you for launching the campaign to fight scammers. I have personally been targeted by phone calls from scammers stating that my social security payments would be cancelled because of fraud, and/or my number is being used by drug dealers. They have even claimed to be Officers. Your campaign actually will help curb these scammers by letting them know that these scams are being televised and uncovered and published. More uncovered scams need to be televised. I pity the people who actually fall for it but by publishing it more people will not answer these ridiculous and continual phone calls.

    • That’s the point. There are thousands of these groups running these scams; it’s a big business and they make millions. So every time we report one it gives the investigators one more piece of information with which to stop these people. Of course one call to report isn’t going to stop the calls; you’re not being targeted by only one, but many different scammers.

  7. Get these all the time I chose to report then
And you can tell their first language is neither English American or Spanish in Texas I can tell

  8. The administration should issue #’s and passwords instead of SS#’s. Banks , DMV. And almost everywhere you go your asked For soc. #
Easy to steal. Maybe the SS I’ll do what I suggest

  9. been receiving phone call 2 to 3 times a day from a
San Diego phone # saying they are from S&S
    858-810-6140.
I have and air horn ready for them

  10. Tnxs for consering each person how important there life matters protecing to keep all family get. Family thogher fur a better sweet home 🏡. Ppl health and children’s health. My blessings to all y’all and great 👍🏻 Job amazing 😉 team work makes it all work government United States 🇺🇸 of Ami rica.

  11. Russell Voight acting omb budget director told a house comittee talking about Trumps 2021 budget, Social security had over payments of 7billion dollars last year. These overpayments were paid to illegals.SS has a rule that if you cant speak english &you tell SS they will give you disabilty payments, what a disgrace.Trump adminastration is trying to change this.

    • Stop watching Fox News! Social Security has no such rule! You cannot receive Social Security or SSI benefits unless you are either a U.S. citizen or a legal alien.

  12. I see YOU, the swindler. I got my disability arrearage check this week. It came with instructions that if it is still in my account on Dec 1, 2020, that it will be counted towards our, (married, wife disabled also), $3000 limit and could reduce our payments. The NEXT business day, my wife gets a letter that says because of the arrearage check I, (we) got just one day earlier, they are going to deduct a full month of our disability. Why follow your own rules, just rip people off.? THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME, this same scam was pulled on us. We fight and we win, but how many others, say mentally disabled folks, do not fight, they just get SWINDLED, by the people pretending to fight the swindlers. ” WHAT RESOURCES DO NOT COUNT FOR SSI? retroactive SSI or Social Security benefits for up to nine months after you receive them (including payments received in installments); ” https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-resources-ussi.htm?fbclid=IwAR3IV8UlV9g5pTRxsQZ4E-d22xHJ15IMpKXV122teGh8HMfSwnOi65uF4Qk we have fought this same practice with every arrearage check,

  13. A few months back I was going to report one of these calls, and I get many. When they began asking for the exact info they remind us NOT to give out, I just backed out and have never tried to report any of my calls again. I just hang up, as I have always done.

  14. here’s the latest NON SS SCAM i got in last 2 days for those of you using FACEBOOK!!

  17. Minutes ago I got a phone call from an Oregon phone number (503-869-1182) that was obvious spam. Not only was it poor quality, it was from a state in which I have never lived full-time. I’m pretty much also inclined to ignore any such contact that is not made via mail asking me to contact SSA versus the other way around.

No follow-up required assuming this was not a legitimate contact. I’ve blocked the number.

  18. We need to protect information being given to any business requesting our personal information. The Seattle Times requested the Department of Retirement System for state workers personal information be given to them by March 9, 2020 the information they have requested my birth date, address, phone, my full name. this sensitive information will be a scammers dream. I am a state worker my way of giving back to the community I live in.
Please help to protect state workers personal information.

  19. I received 2 phone calls with the # 903-767-4363 telling me that my Social Security is in trouble. I hope this helps to catch whoever is doing this.

  20. I get a phone call five minutes ago telling me that they are calling from social security office because they suspect illegal activities on my social security number so it has been suspended. I should press one to continue. I hang up call the social security administration number and I get a recording which direct me to the website online..

  21. I have had 3 phone calls today from Marie Gomez to call 855-971-1934 regarding my SSN being suspended. This is obviously a scam message. Please shut them down. Thank you.

  27. Is this government # for ssa 1 800 772 1213.Because I gave information about my wife s so # ending 1163.
Please advice or help if it isn’t.

  28. Been trying to make an account for months and despite having my phone number matching email social security number all my personal information. I’ve lived in same address same house for 51 years you still block me out every time now how is it that scammers get away with identity theft but a law a bidding citizen of our great nation can’t even open an account🤔🤔🤔

  29. Today, I received a call from a recording claiming to be Social Security. They said my # has been compromised. I hung up because I was under the impression that the administration did not call individuals. I hope that is the case.
Also, I would like to voice my opinion regarding any mailed correspondence. I don’t like the fact that you print out my full SS# in the letter. My name & address should be sufficient. As we all all know the terrible problem regarding identity theft. The administration does not need to help make the problem worse. Thank you for hearing me out. Ps. This letter I am referring to is a letter from the treasury dept. Informing me that they are withholding a bit of my SS payment to pay my bill at the VA pharmacy. I don’t know if that makes a difference that it is from the Treasury Department. Maybe.all Departments should refrain from such practices. Again, Thank You.

  30. I received 2 calls 2/21/20 both times indicating my social security number has been turned in as fraud and my account has been frozen. I unfortunately did not get the information you need to track this scammer, but if they call back, I will.

  31. I received a voicemail with this content:

“1213 if you do not cancel or reschedule this appointment as Social Security representative will call on Monday, February 24 at 10:30 AM if you canceled or rescheduled your appointment today or your business was taken care of today please disregard this message please also be aware that many services are available online at http://www.socialsecurity. I do not recall having an appointment and did not return the call.

Please advise if this was legitimate.

    Thank you,

  32. We hope you can get the scammers off of here. They keep calling threatening to not send my SS check or put me in jail. These people need to get a job & quit these illegal things. There are days we get as many calls as 25 & that is such a nuisance. Thank you.
