Social Security Administration LogoI am pleased to announce that local Social Security offices will restore in-person services, including for people without an appointment, on April 7, 2022.

To avoid waiting in line, I strongly encourage people who can, to use our online services, call us, and schedule appointments in advance rather than walking in without an appointment.

Phone appointments can save you a trip to a busy office. I thank the public for your patience as we work to increase service.

Customers who walk in without appointments may encounter delays and longer waits at our offices. Before coming to an office, we encourage you to visit our Emergency page to check the office status. Be aware that our offices tend to be the busiest first thing in the morning, early in the week, and during the early part of the month, so people may want to plan to visit at other times.

Given that many of the people we serve have health vulnerabilities, and consistent with our union agreements, we are continuing to require certain safety measures including masking (regardless of local guidance), physical distancing, and self-health checks for COVID-19 symptoms. We will provide masks to the public and employees if they need them.

Online Services and telephone remain the most convenient ways to contact the agency.

Most Social Security services are available to the public online and with a my Social Security account, or by telephone. And most Social Security services do not require the public to take time to visit an office. People may create their my Social Security account, a personalized online service, on our website. Many Social Security services are also conveniently available by dialing toll-free, 1‑800‑772‑1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call Social Security’s TTY number, 1‑800‑325‑0778.

As we transition to a new modern phone system, some people may experience a busy signal or be unintentionally disconnected from their call. We sincerely regret this disruption and recommend people call when our National 800 Number may be less busy, such as before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. local time or later in the week. Like our offices, our waits are generally shorter later in the month.

I need help and am unable to get anyone on phone and cannot conduct my business online on my account. Making an appointment requires that I get someone on the 800 number – that seems impossible. I have been on hold for hours.

Wrong. None of the field offices in San Francisco are open. I’ve needed my SSI back pay dispensed so I can rent an apartment (I’m cold, live in my car, live in constant pain due to connective tissue disorder). Also need back pay to pay for surgery that has an 85%-95% success rate at curing what is disabling me. I have faxed the surgical estimate from my Surgeon as well as Zillow listings for appropriate apartments. I have gotten nowhere with the workers at the office handling my case nor from my claims specialist. Enough is enough, I need to be able to walk into a field office here! The postal workers have been working with the public in their office THE ENTIRE PANDEMIC. Why are the SSA workers deserving of more safety at the expense of the claimants & general public?!! Be fair & reopen NOW!!!!

I filed my application for retirement December 6, 2021 online…as of today it just shows that it’s being reviewed. I tried calling the other day got on the phone at 3:46 the person didn’t pick up until 5:24 the lady was not very nice actually kind of rude basically told me wait for a letter from SS asking for any missing items. Hard to make an appointment and when my sister visited one of the SS offices the line was around the corner. I understand SS office must be very busy BUT why would it take so long to review an application?

When it comes down to who should have been impeached between President Trump & Biden. Thats a no brainer. Biden is clearly the worst president ever. He’s even got Jimmy Carter beat. It’s a discrace to America and the entire human race that an incompitant numbnuts thats about as sharp as a bowling ball such as Biden could have ever been elected in the first place. He is a threat to the well being of the citizens of the USA and our safety. It’s clear that his best interests are not doing whats best for us. This self centered bonehead could careless about doing whats best for america and it’s citizens. We need to do a better job in the future to make sure we get the best person fit to be our president. We cannot afford to let any more corrupt braindead DUSHBAGS like BIDEN & Pam Harris be in charge of our well being because it’s obvious that there failers & don’t have a clue what to do. They are there for the money and nothing else. free cell phones for crossing our border. What a JOKE. A discrace to the human race. It’s so corrupt ,unbalievable and quite frightening how such redondant incompitant retards are in charge of our well being and continue to fail and let us down on a daily basis. God help us now, amen!

    • Elaine K.

I agree. Whole heartedly! God help us….

Will illegal immigrants applying for social security numbers who have no appointments be seen before U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents with no appointments?

These illegal immigrants can apply for Enumeration Beyond Entry (EBE) at the local social security office while applying for a work authorization or green card.

The illegal immigrants who Biden lets enter the U.S. have no housing or money. These illegal immigrants pose a threat to U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents. They might steal and murder people to survive.

The Biden Administration wants to end the Department of Homeland Security “Remain in Mexico” policy in May 2022. These illegal immigrants will be able to remain in the U.S. while waiting for a green card.

This illegal immigrants will now be able to apply for a Social Security number at the local offices without the threat of being deported by INS.

The Social Security Administration services wait time is already very bad at the local offices. It is only going to get worse for the U.S. Citizen and Permanent Residents with the ending of the “Remain in Mexico” policy.

I’m 67 and soon to turn 68. I’ve checked on filing a tax return this year but I read at my age I’m not required to. I’m retired, only income I have is Social Security. I’m not due to get a refund. Please tell me for sure that I don’t have to file.

    • Suzanne B.

Janet, as a retired tax preparer my advise is this; as long as your income hasn’t changed(job income), you don’t need to file at your age. What I suggest you do is gather all your tax papers for the year and put them away. There’s always a possibility the IRS will ask why you haven’t filed and if this happens you’d send them copies of your documents. But I doubt that will happen. If you decide to get a part time job, then you will have to file. As long as your financial situation stays the same, just keep your documents. Here’s a website with additional information that I hope will help. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/19/heres-why-some-retirees-no-longer-have-to-file-a-tax-return.html

    • Ann C.

Hi, Janet. Thanks for visiting our blog. You must pay taxes on your benefits if you file a federal tax return as an “individual” and your “combined income” exceeds $25,000. If you file a joint return, you must pay taxes if you and your spouse have “combined income” of more than $32,000. If you are married and file a separate return, you probably will have to pay taxes on your benefits. For more information, visit our Benefits Planner.  For tax questions, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040 or you can visit their website. We hope this information is helpful.
