Social Security Administration Implements New Anti-Fraud Measures to Enhance Telephone Claim Processing
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: April 25, 2025
The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced the implementation of enhanced fraud prevention tools for claims filed over the telephone, further modernizing the agency’s services and strengthening program integrity. Beginning April 14, 2025, SSA will allow individuals to complete all claim types via telephone, supported by new anti-fraud capabilities designed to protect beneficiaries and streamline the customer experience.
The enhanced technology enables SSA to identify suspicious activity in telephone claims by analyzing patterns and anomalies within a person’s account. If irregularities are detected, the individual will be asked to complete in-person identity proofing to continue processing their claim. These advancements allow SSA to maintain the security of its services while continuing to expand access for customers who may be unable to file online or visit an office in person. The agency will continue to conduct identity verification for all in-person claims.
“We are modernizing how we serve the public—enhancing both security and accessibility,” said Leland Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security. “These updates improve our ability to detect and prevent fraud while providing more flexible options for people to access their benefits.”
The updated policy reflects SSA’s broader commitment to customer service, program integrity, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources. SSA has worked around the clock to develop and deploy these improvements, driven by the return of employees to full-time in-office operations.
Surge capacity is being put in place to support higher demand starting on the 14th and last month, SSA spent $16.5 million to modernize telephone services nationwide.
This update supports the Administration’s broader efforts to protect Social Security and ensure higher take-home pay for seniors by ending the taxation of social security. For more information on the President’s commitment to preserving Social Security, visit here.

What anomalies will trigger a the need for a claimant to visit local office? As an advocate we do 3 party call to help people file by telephone. Is this new policy going to effect our ability to assist claimants?

Does the ‘In-Person requirement’ for changes to your Direct Deposit information apply to those retiree’s living overseas? Will I be expected to fly out of the country to the nearest Federal Benefit Unit (FBU) to do this?

Hope this doesn’t make it harder for elderly people to get help, but overall sounds like a smart move.

This press release is meaningless. Telling people they will receive greater support through enhanced customer service and phone support is NOT what the public is experiencing. The administration cannot end taxation of SS without congress. If a majority of congress approved such action, revenues to the US treasury would be greatly reduced, causing the fund to run out of money sooner. Revenues have already been reduced due to deportations of migrants who were paying into the system. Don’t believe everything you read!

Victoria most illegal aliens work and get paid under the table paying no tax. Some illegal aliens use Social Security numbers that belong to other people which causes scrambled earnings information on the work record of citizens and legal workers.
Congress is working on a bill to eliminate the taxation of Social Security benefits. This will not affect the solvency of the program because federal tax dollars are not used for benefits. Only FICA tax us used. Get educated.

Darlene, you misunderstood what Victoria is saying. Sounds like a generalization, not based on fact, when you claim most illegal aliens get paid under the table paying no tax. How do you know? Or is it a broad-brush generalization? So do some Americans who demand to be paid in cash doing contract work so they don’t have to pay into Social Security and Medicare taxes.

I’m with you, Victoria. I don’t believe anything Dudek says as he’s always spinning for Trump. Closing rural offices is NOT improving customer service. Nor is ignoring Social Security’s shortfall in 2034 helping current and future recipients. A measure of how civilized we are as a country is how we treat our senior citizens. Not throw them under the bus because we’re an expense.

What no one mentions and the primary reason SS may be in trouble is the transfer of SS taxes collected being transferred to the general spending fund as directed under Reagan’s regime. The 2 trillion that was promised by the extra SS tax never made it to SS. Our political leaders are ALL crooks so WAKE UP!

Seems odd that many SS employees have just been terminated and offices closed. So now we must show up in person. Where?

Social Security offices have not been closed. Employees have returned to working in the office which will help with service issues. Get educated

Social Security should not be taxed by the federal, state, or local governments. Make it happen President Trump sooner than later.
