Hi, Prince. Thanks for your question. Social Security does not count pension payments, annuities, or the interest or dividends from your savings and investments as earnings. They do not lower your Social Security retirement benefits. For more information, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.

I’m recently divorced after 36 years of marriage. My ex is a high income earner. Do I send SS a copy of my divorce papers and will this help to increase my SS check? My check is very low and it’s all I have to live on. He has not taken his SS, yet. Thank you

Hi, Ina. Thanks for your question. To be eligible for divorced spouse benefits, you had to be married to your former spouse for at least 10 years, and you cannot be eligible for a higher benefit on your own record. For more information on how to qualify for divorced spouse benefits, visit our Benefits Planner. For specific questions and/or to apply, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

Hi. Thanks for visiting our blog. You do not need to report this because any private disability insurance you have will not affect your eligibility for Social Security benefits. If you are receiving or have applied for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, you will need to report the information regarding your private disability benefits.

For more information on the effects of private insurance on Social Security benefits, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.

I’m still working part time, my question is.
I’m going out for a knee replacement and I was wondering if I can collect disability through my job, and still collect my full ssi disability?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Susan. Thanks for your question. If your benefit is from work where you paid Social Security taxes, it will not affect the amount of your Social Security benefit. However, if any part of your benefit is from work where you did not pay Social Security taxes, it could affect the amount of your Social Security benefit. To find out if your Social Security benefit would affect the benefit that you are currently receiving from your former employer, please contact their human resources department. We hope this helps.
