Six New States for Our Online Replacement Card Service

" "We’re happy to announce that we’ve added South Carolina, Kansas, Tennessee, Alaska, Hawaii, and North Carolina to the growing list of areas where you can request a replacement Social Security card online. We now cover 40 states and the District of Columbia, and 86 percent of the U.S population may be eligible to use this service. So far, 2.3 million people have replaced their card by going online.

Your Social Security number is your first and continuous link with Social Security, so losing your card can be frustrating. Fortunately, replacing your card is quick, secure, and free! To replace your card online, first you’ll need to log in to or create your my Social Security account. We protect your personal information using identity verification and other security features. Your security and protection are what matter most; you can take control of your future with secure access to your information anytime, anywhere!

You’ll also need to meet certain requirements to get an online replacement card. You must be a U. S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address, cannot be requesting a name change or any other change to your card, and must have a driver’s license or state-issued identification card from a participating state. You can see if your state participates here.

Keep in mind that, even if you lost your card, you may not need a replacement. In most cases, simply knowing your Social Security number is enough. If you do need a replacement, we make it easy. Once you log in to your account, you can follow the steps to request your replacement Social Security card online.

    You sent a note out on July 25th sating that replacement cards could now be ordered online in N.C. That is not true!

    I work for a state agency (one of the states that allows online SS card replacement) that assists inmate releasing from prison. Is it possible to have the inmate apply on line using our state email address? How long does it take for the replacement to come in?

    Tennessee is one of the states that has been updated to request a replacement SS card online, but I continue to get the notice that my request cannot be processed because of the state I am in. When will the website be officially updated to allow this to happen? I work during the week and the SS office is not open during hours that are reasonable for a working person to get there.

    I tried the online card replacement for North Carolina, they are not allowing online card replacement. If they have changed their policy, they have not updated their website.

      Hi, Dexter. We are sorry to hear that. First, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing the Social Security number is what is important. If you encounter a problem with your personal my Social Security account, you may:
      •Call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. At the voice prompt, say “helpdesk”; or
      •Contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

        It is not working for NC residents. The page has not been updated and does not permit this online service. NC residents DO need a Social Security card to update driver licenses with new security for Real ID.

    That is great. However, I went online for a replacement card and the system told me that I could not apply on line. I called the SSA and was told that my information had not be updated, although the local SS Office has all of my pertinent information. I was told that I would have to go in person and then the great thing is that the next time I could apply online. The local SS Office told me that they were unable to enter my information How ridiculous is that? My SS #is *** – ** – ***. I have a family medical issue at home and it is hard for me to go to the SS Office.
