Six New States for Our Online Replacement Card Service

We’re happy to announce that we’ve added South Carolina, Kansas, Tennessee, Alaska, Hawaii, and North Carolina to the growing list of areas where you can request a replacement Social Security card online. We now cover 40 states and the District of Columbia, and 86 percent of the U.S population may be eligible to use this service. So far, 2.3 million people have replaced their card by going online.
Your Social Security number is your first and continuous link with Social Security, so losing your card can be frustrating. Fortunately, replacing your card is quick, secure, and free! To replace your card online, first you’ll need to log in to or create your my Social Security account. We protect your personal information using identity verification and other security features. Your security and protection are what matter most; you can take control of your future with secure access to your information anytime, anywhere!
You’ll also need to meet certain requirements to get an online replacement card. You must be a U. S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address, cannot be requesting a name change or any other change to your card, and must have a driver’s license or state-issued identification card from a participating state. You can see if your state participates here.
Keep in mind that, even if you lost your card, you may not need a replacement. In most cases, simply knowing your Social Security number is enough. If you do need a replacement, we make it easy. Once you log in to your account, you can follow the steps to request your replacement Social Security card online.

I just tried to request a replacement Social Security card online. I live in California. After I logged into my account, my account information told me to contact my local SS office to request a replacement card. The information in today’s SSA e-mail (July 23, 2019) [about being able to request a replacement card ONLINE] apparently is NOT true for people living in California. Please confirm that people in California should be able to request replacement SS cards online. My SSA account does NOT allow me to do this.

When will US citizens living abroad have access to online services? We cannot visit an office, correspondence takes 60 days and no reply is received. Designated offices through US embassies are slow and inefficient.

Hi, Robert. First, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing the Social Security number is what is important. To see if you’re eligible to apply for a replacement Social Security card online or to learn more on the process and what documents you will need to get a card please visit our Social Security Number and Card page. Keep in mind all submitted documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency and must (unless otherwise indicated) have been issued within the last two years. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. Once you’ve submitted all the needed documents, it can take up to 10 business days from the date we received the application to mail a replacement card. It looks like Virginia is a state where I could get a replacement card via online but when I logon, the website says that I cannot.
