Hello Janie. Our system is set up to take applications three months in advance. However, you cannot apply for survivors benefits online. If you need to apply for benefits, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). You can speak to a Social Security representative between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can also contact your local Social Security office. An appointment is not required, but if you call ahead and schedule one, it may reduce the time you spend waiting to speak to someone. Thanks!

Why can’t I check my Social security on line from Canada?

    • Ray F.

The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet. Please contact your local U.S. embassy or consulate for any assistance related to your Social Security benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad.
In your case, you can also use the Canadian Service Area Directory to determine which Resident Office is near you. We hope this helps!

    • Ray F.

Hello Sandra. We do not have access to personal information in this blog, therefore, we cannot accurately provide an answer for your question. Please continue working with your local office. Also our representatives at our toll free number may be able to assist you. You can call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213, representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thanks.

my mother passed away on april 15 2018 what do i need to do to stop her benefits thanks for your help in ad vance

    • Ray F.

We are sorry for your loss, Joyce. Typically, the funeral director notifies us of an individual’s passing by sending the deceased person’s death certificate to the local Social Security office. However, you may report the death of your mom’s passing by calling 1-800-772-1213 Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Also, if your mother was receiving her payments through direct deposit, the bank usually returns Social Security payments after they receive the report of death.
Social Security benefits are paid the month after they are due. For example, if the person dies in February, you must return the benefit paid in March. Thanks.

I thought there would be an increase in my SS when the tax bill passed but mine is exactly the same as last year. My retirement from civil service changed. I’m a so called double dipper so every penny counts. My husband was retired military but I get nothing from his retirement except SS. I retired from civil service. Why was my income not affected?

    • Ray F.

Hi Edna. Unfortunately, and because of security reasons we do not have access to personal records in this blog and cannot answer your question at this time. One of our representatives should be able to provide you with an explanation. Please call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later during the day or later in the week. Thanks.

It’s wonderful to know we can do so many things online to update our Social Security information and apply for programs. I’ve been on Social Security Disability for over 20 years and this change makes a huge difference and saves time!
