People with ALS Can Get Social Security Disability Benefits SoonerMay was Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Awareness Month. ALS is a progressive disease with no known cure. It advances rapidly and attacks the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. On average, 1,000 people with ALS apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits every year.

The ALS Disability Insurance Access Act of 2019 eliminates the required five-month SSDI waiting period for ALS applicants approved for benefits on or after July 23, 2020. The new law, however, does not affect our disability application or determination process.

This past month, we made the ALS claims processing even faster. Our system now automatically eliminates the five-month waiting period for ALS disability insurance claims. Previously, we had to prepare manual awards and send them to our Processing Centers for action—which took much more time. Now, we can help people with this debilitating disease in just a matter of days.

To give a real life example, a claimant with ALS recently submitted to us an online disability application. Using an electronic health exchange, we were able to collect sufficient medical evidence for the claimant and processed the claim in just two days. To learn more about how this process works, please visit our Disability Benefits Approval page.

Do you need to file for disability benefits? If so, we encourage you to apply online. You can check the status of your disability application online with your personal my Social Security account. Please share this information with your family and friends—and post it on social media.

Kim Cherry, diagnosed 2011. Kim was diagnosed with the bulbar form of ALS and was given one year to live. His symptoms progressed quickly. Soon he was having difficulty breathing, swallowing and even walking short distances. With the help of several holistic medical practitioners and his wife Kay’s research he has been able to reverse most of his symptoms using diet, herbs, supplements and oxygen therapies including direct IV ozone, which he feels has made the most difference. Kim is playing golf again. He is now 69 and these herbs clinic( healthmedlabclinic1@gmail.com) help him recovered fully.

what they call “fast progression” (older female). My arms weakened first, then my hands, my mouth, and throat, and finally my lungs. Throughout my two-and-a-half-year ordeal, I was able to walk with assistance until I was told to use Dr Amend herbal formula which helped me get rid of this ALS/MND totally after using it for just 12 weeks treatment plan. The total cure of Dr Amend herbal remediation brought me back to life again and terminate all the symptoms. I have a great herbal doctor, unique and honest….contact Dr Amend right now if you have same problem, WhatsApp him now via +2348

I am wondering why other terminal illnesses like stage IV Pancreatic Cancer which there isn’t any cure for, has to wait the 5 month waiting period. There is no cure and the survival rate of a year is less than a 10 % These people have worked there whole lives and should be entitled to disability payments right away after approval.

Care for the elderly is a special type of service that has many subtleties and nuances. It’s no secret that the character of most people changes with age, and often not for the better, get more info on United Medicare Centre

    Hi Vonda,

Can you please tell me the time frame it takes to get an answer for disability when they have piles of medical information? And is there a limit on how long one must wait?

    Thank you.

    • Patty

Hi, Sarah, thanks for using our Blog. The length of time to get a disability decision varies. Social Security pays disability benefits to people if they have a medical condition that has prevented them from working or is expected to prevent them from working for at least 12 months. We use the same five-step process to make a decision on each application. For more information about the status of your claim, please contact your local Social Security Office. We hope this information is helpful.

I was diagnosed with ALS/MND last year in May 2019. our doctor put me on riluzole, letting me know there was no cure but the medication might provide me a few more months of delayed symptoms. ALS progresses at different rates and affects different body parts first. me being 60 at this time, fell into a category of what they call “fast progression” (older female). My friend tried this herbal formula and at first he felt fine. After a few weeks that changed. His leg became painful, and in 2 weeks they had to amputate his toe. Then they had to take his lower half of the leg off. He swore that the herbal formula worked though, and kept taking it. In the second month he complained of pain in his thumb. You guess it, 2 weeks later they amputated his thumb. But his ALS progression seems to have slowed up a bit…or did it? In the 4th month, and after having lost both of his legs and one arm, I finally talked him into cutting the herbal formula out. When he quit, he noticed that nothing changed. He did not feel well though, and went through a withdrawal for about a week. Finally, he went back to his ALS team and told them about it. When the Neuro spoke to him he gave him the what for. Turns out that most folks taking herbal supliments from this source cut their survival rates by many months. At the end of the year, my friend passed.

So if you are thinking about taking this herbal suppliment, you should really talk to your ALS team first. Fair warning!
