couple viewing information on a laptop togetherWe’re pleased to announce that we’ve expanded the online options for you to repay overpayments. If you have an overpayment debt, you may be eligible to make a full or partial payment using Pay.gov or your bank’s online bill pay option. Pay.gov is a secure online service provided by the Department of the Treasury. Only individuals who are not currently receiving Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income payments, but need to pay back an overpayment, may use this service.

Using Pay.gov to Make Your Payment

Our billing notices now include the Pay.gov website information as well as a new Remittance ID. The Remittance ID is a 10-digit alphanumeric number used instead of your Social Security number for online payments.

You can easily make a payment by following these steps:

  • Use the link in your billing notice or visit Treasury’s secure payment site at Pay.gov.
  • Enter “Social Security” in the search box.
  • Click on “Continue” under the Repay Your Social Security Overpayment Online section.
  • Follow the instructions on the following page and click “Continue to the Form.”
  • Enter the Remittance ID number found on your billing notice and repayment amount.
  • Enter your name, address, and phone number in required fields.
  • Follow the remaining prompts to complete your payment.

You will receive an email receipt confirming your payment.

Using Your Bank’s Online Bill Pay Option to Make Your Payment

A second option is to use your bank’s online bill pay feature. You can repay an overpayment debt and have it applied to your overpayment balance the next day. Only individuals who are not currently receiving Social Security benefits or Supplemental Security Income payments, but need to pay back an overpayment, may use this service.

You can conveniently make a payment using this option by following these steps:

  • Use your bank or financial institution’s online bill pay option and search for “Social Security Administration” as the Payee.
  • Enter the Remittance ID number found on your billing notice as your “Account Number” and your mailing address.
  • Enter the desired repayment amount and indicate whether you would like it to be a recurring payment.
  • Follow the remaining prompts to complete your payment.

These new payment options provide secure and convenient online ways to meet your needs. You can learn more on our Pay an Overpayment page. Please share this information with your friends and family—and post it on social media.

My Son & I are both disabled, I receive SSDI 45 years of working and paying my FICA. My son received SSI at 9 months old in 2003 until I was awarded in 2010 and then drew off of my Entitlements and SSN. We never received any assistance or benefits or grants and wasn’t informed about any programs or advocates. I was left doing the research and advocating but I was retaliated against by his school and IEP because I needed a modification on my van or the CAP GRANT that DC told me about the office of special education. I question this in the IEP MEETING WITH EVERYONE THERE DEPT OF VOCATIONAL AND REHABILITATION, My child needed a handicap accessible vehicle and I asked about the grant they stated they never heard of it. My son for years was neglected by the State of Tennessee and was denied Home Health, transportation and modification and they stated when he is in 11th grade they will help with transportation well that never happened because the director of Special Ed turned me in to CPS and they took my son illegally and asked his father to surrender his parental rights and my son lost his support check and health insurance from the sheriff’s department and came after me for support and garnished my SSDI for something that they drummed up medical neglect which he was cleared by all doctors. The first thing that they took was his SSI check and my son never seen a dime of it he never received his support payments he received nothing they wouldn’t tell me where his money was going to who had it is it collecting interest they took everything and I won’t even think he got the clothes or whatever he needed because he was calling me up 2 pay his phone bill and to buy him clothes and to send him money. I never lost my parental rights because they had to come to me to consent for several different things but yet they would not give me any information regarding his medical or his school records which I am entitled to because I’m his mother they never investigated I never got my due process in court being disabled myself and going through a lot of emotions and they mentally tormented me they mentally tormented my son and damage him. He never got his transition like they promised he never got his license like they promised he never got his Transportation like they promised but the foster parents got everything like a new home by bedroom worth $410,000 a handicap van it probably was about $45,000 and they don’t work you’re 27 years old and they haven’t even paid in their FICA but they’re collecting all these kids and getting money I think it’s absurd and it’s a violation of our Constitution and our civil liberties and I think it’s wrong what they put me through and made me lose everything I owned that I worked hard for and then my son almost died and their hands. And I still don’t know where his money went to that was actually my money that he drew off of and I have a right to know we have parental rights and what they did was illegal it was unconstitutional and I never got my due process in court to prove that I was innocent and I was treated like damn garbage at 60 years old. And I if my son was supposed to give up his whole Social Security check to whoever when they got paid the foster parents of course it’s a good job anybody would want that job I get all kinds of money free from the federal government can the state has 10 million dollars and their checkbook for foster care and adoption and the parents and these children get nothing now that is ridiculous when were the taxpayer and we paid in are taxes for our benefits that we don’t even get $30 in food stamps they’re giving me what the hell can you do with that they don’t even follow any of the federal laws and I’m about sick and tired and how we being are being treated you’re pushing us to work we try to work and then we don’t get the unemployment Pua with the covid when me and my son are at high risk. Pushing us to work I ain’t working and I ain’t paying no more I didn’t get what I deserve. I worked hard the 45 years for my family what’s the state destroyed and then my oldest son a veteran with the United States Army and he also was discriminated against this is America right the land of bondage and poverty and control. Tell me one thing that is good in all this that we should be proud of people stealing your children strangers did I didn’t even know and then for three years I’m still dealing with this crap then you wonder why there’s mental illness it’s more mental abuse. I like to hear from somebody that supervisor and tell me if I’m wrong. They took him away from his family and wouldn’t even offer to give to his brother and falsifying documents oh, this is totally wrong and it should be investigated because how they treated me was awful when they didn’t even know who I was as a person and what I did for a living with no criminal record it’s despicable and the judge wouldn’t even hear me. And I meant all you hear is the Social Security Act yeah well Social Security did nothing to protect my innocent son at 15 years old in a wheelchair almost paralyzed the neuromuscular disease and now because they didn’t give me the help that I needed for him home health and I had to lift him all these years by myself now I’m got nerve damage in my neck and back thanksto the e state and federal government for making my health worse than what it was and I still can’t get no help I’m still getting denied when I paid in on my taxes.

When it comes to medical emergencies, personal loans are the biggest savior for their instant approval and disbursal features. An Aadhar card provides a universal identity to every citizen and reduces the number of documentation required to avail of a loan. Gettingpersonal loans on aadhar card is extremely easy and straightforward.

What about having a way to get paid by the SSA for a underpayment from them to a retiree (me)? I have been trying unsuccessfully (emails, calls, letters) for about 3 years to get SSA to pay me an adjustment. There should be a simpler way without waiting YEARS for a simple, and well documented, underpayment.

I used pay.gov for almost 2 years to pay DEBT (past time due to VA) & not to pay back overpayments. This money was always accepted but I never recieved electronic receipts or email acknowledgements. What happened?? This was 1918, 1919 & Jan & Feb of 1920, until COVID flared.

I owe a overpayment, I have been paying on it for a few years now. I have called a couple of times and tried to find out what my outstanding balance is. But I have never been able to. It seems that whomever I speak with just passes the buck. I would like to know what I have left to pay. They take the amt of my overpayment from my monthly check.

My ssa payments are quarnished, from a said overpayment 25 years ago. 200,000 plus! I was never allowed a personal conference, which is a due process violation. Please waive the overpayment. Case has been adjudicated, without my right for a conference. David Sinkoe Pleas help me. This is definitely against equity and good conscience.

Hi Peggy. The best way to check and maintain your benefits is in your personal my Social Security account. If you do not already have an account, you can create one. Once you are logged in to your account, select the “Benefit and Payment Details” tab. From there you will see the Overpayments tab where you can view the overpayment balance and the status of the overpayment. If you are unable to create a my Social Security account or do not want to, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can call your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information.
