Finally got my letter from ssa with a reset code. Problem is there’s nowhere to use it at the login screen. I tried typing my user name and entering the code as the password. No good. I typed in my user name and clicked ‘forgot my password’, tried to use the reset code on the next screen. Didn’t work then either. Of course, if I try a third time, I”ll get locked out AGAIN.

Fix this please. Do NOT direct me to some other poorly run government website. FIX IT.

    Hi,
I have been locked out of my account. I have only my user name, and I do not have my security answers. I wish I had never opened the account now. I have spent hours on the phone and submitted twice for a new password only to have it never come. I called the local office and the phone loop rang for 45 minutes. What do I have to do to get my account opened up? I’m starting to feel like there is a reason that I cannot get access. I will call again tomorrow and be prepared for the hour wait for someone to answer.

Good Luck, Karen. I’m in the same boat. Got my reset code today and no instructions on where to enter it.

My elderly mother cannot navigate the online system and forgot her password and security questions. After being locked out of the account, we requested a password reset on Feb 3rd. On Feb 20, a letter arrived with the temporary password. We tried to use the temp password to log in… only to have it say “expired”. How can you make a temp password expire before it arrives in the mail??? We are now awaiting ANOTHER letter in the mail, however if it follows the same path, the new temp password will also expire before we can use it. HELP!!!!

What can I do to correct my DOB with the social security administration.

    • Vonda

Hi Michael, thanks for using our blog. To correct your date of birth on your Social Security record, you will need to apply for a corrected Social Security card. Visit our Learn What Documents You Need for details on the documentation requirements. Under the heading, “Type of Card,” select “Corrected” for a list of the documents needed. You will need to provide evidence of your age (for example, a U.S. public birth certificate) and current documentation for evidence of identity. For complete instructions, go to the Social Security Number and Card web page.

If you have additional questions regarding the process, you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

My social security account online has been futile for the last few years that I have it. In fact I have never been able to access it since I opened it. I have call the SS office and all they can do is send me a code to enter which was expired by the time I got it. There are no instructions on where to enter a reset code. I still work and have limited time to deal with this. I have worked computers and portals for years but this system is ridiculous and the SS Office will not send me my annual report since I have an online ss account.

It appears there are two different issues.
The password reset and the 2 way authentication code (RESET CODE).
I was able to log in with my username and password but my cell phone had changed. I could not get the authentication code. They sent me the RESET CODE in the mail 3 weeks later. No instructions of how to use it or what to do with it.
I was able to log in as usual. It asked me a couple of questions and then asked for the RESET CODE to change my authentication code location. I changed the location to my new cell phone number. ALL DONE! It worked. Surprised.
This does not help those looking to change their password. Hopefully it gives you some insight as to what the RESET CODE is used for. Good Luck.
