I am a csrs retiree offset and I draw my social security at a reduced amount. I was wondering could I draw off of my husband’s instead of mine his it was much more. He is still living

    • Ann C.

Hi, Sheila. Thanks for your question. To qualify for spouse’s benefits, your spouse must be receiving retirement or disability benefits. Keep in mind that if you qualify for your own benefits and for benefits as a spouse, we always pay your own benefits first. If your benefits as a spouse are higher than your own benefits, you will get a combination of benefits equaling the higher spouse benefit. VIsit our Benefits Planner for more information. Keep in mind, generally, a pension based on work that is not covered by Social Security (for example, Federal civil service and some State or local government agencies) may cause the amount of your Social Security benefit to be reduced. The Government Pension Offset, or GPO, affects spouses, widows, and widowers with pensions from a federal, state, or local government job. It reduces their Social Security benefits in some cases. For specific questions, you can can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

What are the steps that i have to do to file for my social security and then subsequently file for 50% spousal social security?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Darrell. Thanks for your questions. Our system is set up to take retirement applications three months in advance. You can apply for Social Security retirement benefits when you are at least 61 years and 9 months of age. When you are ready you can complete the online application for Social Security retirement benefits in as little as 15 minutes. We hope this helps.

I have a question about the mysocialsecurity.gov website as it relates to the new login.gov sign-in process. I had already established a mysocialsecurity account, but would rather use the new login.gov process (due to better security options). Under my current mysocialsecurity account, if I use the option under “security settings” called “deactivate online account,” will I then be able to establish a new account using LOGIN.GOV afterwards. Thanks for clarifying

    • Ann C.

Hi, Thomas. Thanks for your question. You are able to sign in with your Login.gov credentials instead of your previous my Social Security credentials. You can continue to have both sets of credentials if you wish. We hope this helps.

Is a “compassionate allowance” paid in addition to Social Security benefits or is it lumped together?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Dan. Thanks for your question. Compassionate Allowances are a way to quickly identify diseases and other medical conditions that, by definition, meet Social Security’s standards for disability benefits. To learn more information, please visit our Compassionate Allowances page. Keep in mind, we do not base your Social Security benefit amount on the severity of your disability. We base it on your average lifetime earnings before your disability began. Disability payments are established at the highest rate possible, and we use the highest years of your earnings to calculate your monthly benefit amount. We hope this information helps.
