I prepare taxes for my brother, who does not have internet nor email. He receives SSI. Is he supposed to receive a form similar to SSA-1099? Or is SSI not subject to IRS reporting?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Nancy. Thanks for your question. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is not taxable. However, under current law, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) considers Social Security benefits taxable income for beneficiaries whose countable income exceeds certain limits. To learn more, visit our Income Taxes and Your Social Security Benefit webpage. For further tax questions, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040 or you can visit their website. We hope this helps.

I have applied for benefits 3 times. Was not approved because of work credits. I was told that I would have to work for 7 years. I am in a wheelchair with an amputated leg and other health issues. I can’t stand or walk for long periods of time. I was also told that because my spouse received benefits, that I couldn’t get SSI. His income just barely cover household expenses. So essentially it leaves me without an income to take care of my own medical expenses. I would love any help on advice of what to do.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Paula. We are sorry to hear about your condition and situation. You may be eligible to receive social services from the state in which you live. These services include free meals, housekeeping help, transportation, or help with other problems. To get information about services in your area and find out if you qualify, you will need to contact your state or local social services or welfare office. We hope this helps.

    Hi,

I established a My Social Security account in September of 2023. I recently received notification that my new statement is available. I attempted to log on via login.gov.

The website asks me for an activation code. I have the letter from last year, but the website says that code has expired.

I tried again this time saying I don’t have a code. After completing the next form, I get the message, “An account has already been created with the information you entered.”

I spent over two hours reaching someone on the toll free who told me that I needed to create a new account. The website tells me I can’t create a new account because, “An account has already been created with the information you entered.”

I tried resetting the password. The website tells me that there is no such account and that I need to create an account.

I am stuck in an actually Catch-22.

Please provide me with a contact who can help me access my account.

    Thank you.

    Best regards,
    Guy

Hi, Guy. We are sorry to hear you have had difficulty accessing your personal my Social Security account. Please contact the Login.gov contact center for assistance. The Login.gov contact center will assist you through the Login.gov proofing flow only i.e. to help create, sign in and manage your login.gov account. This is done only through their online web support page (https://login.gov/contact/) where you can submit your questions/concerns. Though you can submit your questions at any time, login.gov’s customer support operating hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) and it could take up to two business days for their customer support agents to respond to inquiries. We hope this helps.

When his wife went into SSA, they said that he was not covered and that no benefit was payable. I’m pretty sure they got this wrong. Who do we talk to about this?

My friend, age 49, recently passed leaving two teenage boys. He did not have 40 quarters of coverage, but he did have coverage for all of the last 3 years. His online Social Security Benefit Statement shows that his kids were eligible for a survivor benefit of $2k/mo. When his wife went into SSA, they said that he was not covered and that no benefit was payable. I’m pretty sure they got this wrong. Who do we talk to about this?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Chris. We are sorry to hear about your loss and we are sorry to hear your friend’s application for survivors benefits did not go the way she had hoped. Social Security wants to be sure that every decision made about Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) claim is correct. If she does not agree with our decision, she has the right to file an appeal. She must make her request within 60 days from the date she received her notice of denial. If she has addtitional questions, we encourage her to continue to work with her local Social Security office. She can ask to speak to a supervisor on her next call or visit. We hope this helps.
