I am having a difficult time trying to change my direct deposit account. The routing number is the same. It’s just that I want my money to go into a different account at the same institution. As you well know all local offices are closed. Please help.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Daniel. Thanks for the question. If you’re receiving Social Security benefits (retirement, survivors, or disability), you can start or update your direct deposit information by using your personal my Social Security account.

If receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or unable to conduct business online, you can start or update your direct deposit by contacting the bank, credit union, or savings and loan association or by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for more information.

Tried to set up my social security account today. What a joke
The comment below says it all…. “Paid for at U.S. taxpayer expense

  8. BONNIE M.

Please tell me where to enter (temporary) password on line.

  9. BONNIE M.

I got a letter from #SS, telling me to go to http://www.socialsecurity.gov./myaccount online
& then create the temporary password you sent me so I can get my card. I called the number you suggested (local & 800) & had no luck. I just need to put in this password you sent me , but it looks like anything I press will be asking for another card & I’ll be getting another temporary password. Can you help me receive my replacement #SS card(as I misplaced the one I got last year)?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Bonnie, thanks for using our blog. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for information on how to retrieve or change your password. When you sign in to your account, use your temporary password.

As for requesting a replacement Social Security card, you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, and you’re unable to apply online, you can complete the application process through the mail. However, if you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. You can also call your local office and see if they will mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. We are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.
