My dad died in 2020, and I reported the death to Soc Sec. We now need to prepare a tax return and need a copy of his 1099. I don’t know whether it was mailed out, but his former home was sold. What do I need to do to obtain his 1099 for 2020? thank you.

    • Vonda

We are very sorry for your loss, Bob. The SSA-1099 is mailed in January to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to call the local field office after February 1, 2021. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

I have a question about SSA-1099s. The January direct deposit for Social Security is December’s payment. So is a January 2021 direct deposit included on the 2020 SSA-1099 since it was actually payment for December 2020?

    • Vonda

Hi Charles, thanks for using the blog. When the January 3 check delivery date falls on a non-banking day and the first previous banking day is in the previous year, we deliver the January benefit check in December. However, for taxation of benefits purposes, the check for January 3 that we issued in late December is treated as if we issued it in the year associated with the intended January 3 delivery date. We hope this helps!

      • Charles E.

OK I think I got it — for someone who was getting Social Security starting prior to May 1997 the deposit date is the third of the month. The January payment got pushed back to the end of December. But this deposit (which is actually for December 2020) since it would normally be in January will be reported in the SSA-1099 for 2021 that gets sent out in early 2022.

Hi my wife and I are green card holders but plan to repatriate to the UK. Would we be be able to claim our retirement benefits in the UK?

    • Vonda

Hi Christopher, thanks for using our blog. If you do move, you are required to report your change of address to Social Security, even if we are sending your payments to a bank or other financial institution. Our publication, “Your Payments While You Are Outside the United States”, explains how being outside the United States may affect your Social Security payments. If you aren’t a U.S. citizen, you must meet one of the conditions for payment described in this publication.

You may use our Payments Abroad Screening Tool to see if your benefits will continue indefinitely, stop after six consecutive months or if certain country specific restrictions apply. We hope you find this helpful!

I handle all my mother’s finances because she is in an assisted living facility and she has dementia. She did not get a Social Security statement this year for some reason.
(She has all of her SS benefits directly deposited into her checking account.) She does not have an online my Social Security account, and according to the rules, I am not allowed to set one up for her. I tried calling SS about this but their phone wait time was an hour and forty five minutes.

So at this point, I don’t know what to do. What do elderly people do, who either don’t have access to a computer or don’t know how to use one.

    • Vonda

Hi Thomas, thanks for using our blog. Because of privacy and security concerns, you will not be able to conduct Social Security business on behalf of your mother unless you are her representative payee. Having a power of attorney, being an authorized representative, or having a joint bank account with your mother does not authorize you to access information on her Social Security record. If she does not have a representative payee and is not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees” or visit our Representative Payee webpage.

If your mother is capable, please check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for the options on how to obtain a replacement 1099. Your mother may be able to request a replacement SSA-1099 by using our automated telephone service at 1-800-772-1213. You can conduct the automated services 24 hours a day. At the prompt, she would indicate that she’s requesting a replacement SSA-1099.

To apply to be your mother’s representative payee, you can call your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.
