Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.

A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Get your benefit verification letter;
  • Check your benefit and payment information;
  • Change your address and phone number;
  • Change your direct deposit information;
  • Request a replacement Medicare card; or
  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

With a personal my Social Security account, you can do much of your business with us online, on your time, like get a copy of your SSA-1099 form. Visit our website to find out more.

    I cannot reset my account, I have a reset code but when I try to use it, it tells me I don’t have an account, when I go to set up a new account it says an account already exists. How can I resolve this problem with the offices closed. I explained the problem to an agent when they sent the reset code.

    • Kenny O.

      Hello Dave, we are very sorry to hear about the difficulties you are experiencing. If the password reset questions aren’t working for you, you can call your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

    I have not received my 2021 Soc.Sec. benefit statement as of yet, but my wife received hers 3 weeks ago. I usually get it around November, every year, but this year nothing yet. I am trying to go on line to see if there’s any way I can print it out but I’m having the worst time with trying to find it. If there’s any way I can get some help from you in guiding me along with this. I would so appreciate it!

    • Kenny O.

      Hi Serafim, thanks for using our blog. In January 2021, we will send the 2020 SSA-1099 (Social Security Benefit Statement), showing the amount of benefits received in the prior calendar year. Hopefully this helps!

    Ditto to Ken’s December 17, 2020 19:19PM question about making SSA 1099s available online in December like military retired pay 1099-Rs. Many of us begin preparing or taxes in December and need the most accurate information we can get. I notice that Ken’s question is still unanswered.

    I never received ssa-1099 for 2019 in my mail , so I tried to get it by logging on “my social security account” and under “replacement documents”. The response I get is “contact us”. What is the use of this web site if you cannot see this necessary information on line as publicized everywhere. It is frustrating.

    If SS is paid for preceding month, why cannot 1099ssa be available prior to the end of month January.
    Example- Military pay has same pay procedure and 1099r’s are ready December 15th. The pay for January is already known.
    The amount for January’s SSA is given already.

    I see the 1099s are ‘being mailed’. Is there a way to determine WHEN mine is due out? By Last four? Last name? State? How is the order of mailing determined and carried out?
    This is all I’m waiting on to prep for filing. Thank You.

    • Vonda

      Hi Harold, thanks for using our blog. In January 2021, we will send the 2020 SSA-1099 (Social Security Benefit Statement), showing the amount of benefits received in the prior calendar year. A worksheet (IRS Notice 703) is included for determining whether any portion of the Social Security benefits received are subject to income tax. Thanks.

      • Harold

        Umm, some more clarity, please. HOW is the ORDER of 1009s DETERMINED for MAILING? That is, my last name begins with W. I’m 71. Last four? Alphabetically? I’m trying to determine HOW SOON, this last document for me to get my return prepped, is delaying me. Thanks You.

    I have spoken to several agents with no results and my frustration is through the roof. Plus, I mailed in a Form 795 stating I don’t want Medicare starting in January, 2021 when I turn 65 because I found out after I signed up for Medicare I can’t contribute to my HSA anymore. I’m still working and I want to contribute to my HSA. Can someone please fix this? My phone number is 626-429-1366. Please call me asap as I have called SSA several with long waits trying to get this issue resolved.
