If you receive a Benefit Verification letter, sometimes called a “budget letter,” a “benefits letter,” a “proof of income letter,” or a “proof of award letter,” we have good news for you! A new standardized Benefit Verification letter is now available when you need proof of Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security Income, or Medicare.

In addition to name, date of birth, and the benefits received, the new Benefit Verification letter includes other identifiers to prevent misuse and fraud. This is an added benefit to you as proof of income for loans, housing assistance, mortgage, and other verification purposes.

The same standardized letter is also available if you need proof that you do not receive benefits, or proof that benefits are pending. If you are an individual representative payee, you can use the my Social Security Representative Payee portal to access the same standardized Benefit Verification letter online for your beneficiaries.

This new standardized Benefit Verification letter is another example of our commitment to improve our service to you.

No matter how you request your letter, whether calling our National 800 Number, your local office, the Interactive Voice Response system, or online with your personal my Social Security account, the Benefit Verification letter now contains a seamless look.

    • Vonda

Hi Linda, thanks for using our blog. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to get a benefit verification letter. This letter is sometimes called a budget letter, a benefits letter, a proof of income letter or a proof of award letter. Your mother also may be able to request a benefit verification letter by using our automated telephone service at 1-800-772-1213. She can conduct the automated services 24 hours a day. At the prompt, she indicates that she’s requesting a proof of income letter.

Because of privacy and security concerns, you will not be able to conduct Social Security business on behalf of your mother unless you are her representative payee. Having a power of attorney, being an authorized representative, or having a joint bank account with your mother does not authorize you to access information on her Social Security record. If your mother does not have a representative payee and she is not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees” or visit our Representative Payee webpage.

If you would like to apply to be your mother’s representative payee, contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information.

  6. Becca

I need a SIGNED benefits letter. The one that you can order online does not have the signature of an SSA official and is NOT acceptable as proof of income for moving out of the country. How can I get a signed letter? It is my understanding that SSA is not doing in person appointments at the moment. Is there any alternate options for obtaining the official signature needed for residency in another country?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Becca. Social Security offices are currently open only for in-person appointments for limited, critical situations. We are unable to accept walk-in visitors. If you feel you have a critical situation, please visit here for more information. We hope this helps.

  8. William

The address on my online Benefit Verification Letter is wrong, months of calling has only left me with, “I don’t know, maybe wait till it fixes itself” My address is correct everywhere else…. just not on the online Benefit Verification Letter. Help.

    • Vonda

Hi William, thanks for using our blog. Please call your local Social Security office and ask them to send you a benefit verification letter so it arrives at the right address. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

      • William

Thank you for your quick reply. I have done each of those options, repeatedly. I’m interested in actually repairing the error, but no one at that number is interested. (not only are the wait times long, but they disconnect from you 2 or 3 times per half day calling session), for something that should be a 40 second, ‘click- click- print’. Is there a number I can call for someone who understands AND has the capabilities to repair? Thank you again.

      • William

Also, they only actually mail the letter one time out of 10 request. And since it didn’t come again today, my time has expired and my benefits are being cancelled. Thanks for being an inept operation. Seems like in 2021, there would be a way to contact qualified individuals who could assist, outside of website comment sections. Enjoy the day.
