man and woman on laptop It’s that time of year again. Preparing for tax season can seem overwhelming. Some forms and paperwork might be difficult to track down. If you misplaced your Benefits Statement or haven’t received it by the end of January, we’ve made it easy to go online to get a replacement with a personal my Social Security account.

An SSA-1099, also called a Benefit Statement, is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to the more than 60 million people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received from Social Security in the previous year so people know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on their tax return.

For noncitizens who live outside of the United States and received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we’ll send form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

If you currently live in the United States and need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, we have a way for you to get a replacement quickly and easily. Go online and get a replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

Every worker in the United States should create a personal my Social Security account. The secure and personalized features of my Social Security are valuable tools to help Americans plan for retirement.

I need to get a replacement social security card. I work in Texas but live in Alabama, can I do this over the phone or online?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Terry, thank you for your question. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to apply for a replacement Social Security card. If you are unable to apply online and you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address. We hope this helps.

How do I go about having taxes taken out of my social security. Also, When I started to get medicare I was told I would pay 135.00 a month. A few months later I was being charged 186 q month. I then receive a letter telling me I was going to have to pay over 300.00 a month for one tear and then my payment would go back to 186.00 a month Well that never happened I just keep getting charged more. I need to get this remidied immediately.

I am the Successor Trustee of my brother through the John R. Hudak Family Trust. We lived 2000 miles apart and I was not personally able to travel to his home in Arizona. Now I must do his Income Tax and am missing his SSA-1099. How can I get a duplicate?? Thank you for your attention to this request.

    • Vonda V.

We’re sorry to hear about your loss, Helen. The benefit statement is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you do not have access to the mail at that address, the executor will need to go into the local field office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. Unfortunately, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I made a mistake and threw my w-2 form of my social security and a replacemrnt form to get my taxes done.

    • Vonda V.

Hello Erhel. Thank you for using our blog. Generally, you get a W-2 form from your employer’s human resource or personnel office.

The Form SSA-1099 shows the amount of Social Security benefits paid during last year and the amount of any voluntary Federal tax withheld.

For further income tax questions, you will need to contact the IRS. Their toll-free number is 1-800-829-1040.

      We hope this helps!
