Here are five things you can learn more about on our Parents and Guardians page:

  1. Social Security’s promise — We know how much your loved ones mean to you. Our promise of a lifetime of protections extends to them. When you work and pay Social Security taxes, your children may also qualify to receive benefits on your record.
  2. It starts with your child’s Social Security Number —Our journey together begins at birth. A child needs a Social Security number if the child’s going to have a bank account or if you want to claim them on your tax returns. You can apply for your baby’s number and card right in the hospital when you complete the information for their birth certificate.
  3. What happens when disability strikes — Children with disabilities are among our most vulnerable citizens. Social Security is dedicated to helping those with qualifying disabilities and their families through our Social Security disability program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.
  4. When a parent or guardian dies— Our benefits help ease the financial burden on your loved ones after you die by providing monthly payments to eligible widows, widowers, children, and dependent parents.
  5. If you’re raising your grandchild — Your minor grandchildren may be eligible for benefits while you’re receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits, in certain situations.

    As a student Age 19 collecting, we do not understand the payment end date…. I tried looking up if my 12th grade school graduation was on May 31 2019 (this was revised from May 30th to the 31st due to snow days) when is my last payment to be received? Am I entitled to a May benefit and is the May 2019 benefit paid in June or not??? Letter I receive just says benefits stop in June which does not explain payment information at alll. Why can’t you be crystal clear in the notification letter on benefit date and payment date> Is the May 2019 benefit to be received and is it issued / paid in June 2019 or not? Please assist.

      Hi, Natisha. Social Security pays disability benefits to people if they have a medical condition that has prevented them from working or is expected to prevent them from working for at least 12 months. We use the same five-step process to make a decision on each application. You may also find our listing of impairments useful. If you feel that you meet our definition of disability, you can apply online. We hope this information helps.

    It might be interesting the give the parameters under which grandchildren can receive benefits and not just say in “certain situations” which is meaningless.

      Hi John, thank you for your question. Under current law, Social Security can only pay benefits to grandchildren if the grandparent is providing more than 50% of their support and the biological parents of the children are either deceased or disabled, or the grandparent legally adopts the grandchild.     We are parents and legal guardians to our 26-year old disabled son, who now receives social security and Medicare. We are retired now. What do we need to do to ensure that our disabled son receives extra social security payments when we die?

      Hi Cheryl, thanks for using our blog to ask your question. If your son is already receiving disabled adult child benefits on your record or his father’s record, his benefits automatically convert to survivor benefits if you pass away.     There are many things under distress but none greater than Social Security! Congress and the Administration must resolve the issuing facing the elderly! Trump – I do not believe will because he has never had to face issues like 99% of the Senior Citizens have had to face! Jack taught him all the ways to lie, cheat and steal in the back of the family limo! Trump was not a good student except in the Limo lessons!
