Expanding Social Security Field Office Hours

Currently, a Social Security field office is generally open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to Noon on Wednesdays. Beginning on January 8, 2020, offices will remain open until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, with typical field office hours from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This change restores Wednesday public service hours that were last in place in late 2012. You can locate the closest field office to you using our field office locator.

In addition to expanding our hours of service, we will be hiring 1,100 front line employees to provide service on the agency’s National 800 Number and in its processing centers. We are currently bringing onboard 100 new processing center employees and approximately 500 new teleservice representatives for the 800 Number. An additional 500 hires for the 800 Number will occur later in 2020.

Increasing full public service hours at our nationwide network of more than 1,200 field offices is the right thing to do and will provide additional access. The hiring of 1,000 new employees to provide service through our National 800 Number, and an additional 100 hires to process people’s Social Security benefits at our processing centers around the country are steps in the right direction in our mission to greatly improve the service we provide.

While we continue to improve both the access to and the experience with our services, it is important to note that most Social Security services do not require the public to take time to visit an office. People may create a my Social Security, a personalized online service, at

Through their personal my Social Security account, people can check personal information and conduct business with Social Security. If they already receive Social Security benefits, they can start or change direct deposit online, and if they need proof of their benefits, they can print or download a current Benefit Verification Letter from their account.

People not yet receiving benefits can use their online account to get a personalized Social Security Statement, which provides earnings history information as well as estimates of future benefits. Currently, residents in 40 states and the District of Columbia may request a replacement Social Security card online if they meet certain requirements. The portal also includes links to information about other online services, such as applications for retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits.

Many Social Security services are also conveniently available by dialing toll-free, 1-800-772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call Social Security’s TTY number, 1-800-325-0778.

    This is a note to all the Social Security workers who are fortunate enough to have a job and that job is answering the phone. You have a tough job. There are thousands of calls a day with a wide range of people that includes their understanding of the english language and the ins and outs of social Security along with all the issues of each individual. Having just recently needed to “deal” with Social Security I’m getting the impression you have trained to some extent on how to deflect a conversation and stear it back to where you think it should be going. I have witnessed on every single call how quickly the tone goes from very helpful to down right mean. Don’t dare think about contradicting the issue or asking a question they do not want to answer. Very intimidating and totally destroys any positive experience. I get it. At times some people can be a real pain in the neck, but PLEASE, everyday before you clock in and take that first call ask yourself this question. How would I treat this person or expect someone else treat this person if it was my Mother, Father, Grandmother or friend. You should be trying to the best of your ability to remain respectful and helpful. Keep in mind you have your job because of us.

    Our local office in Clarksville TN is closed and has no open date planned. To get a replacement ss card for a minor I was told it is required of the parent to complete ss 5 form and send in by mail along with the original ID of the parent. This procedure is not practical. An original ID is needed almost daily to verify identity. Cashing checks, picking your children up from school, going to the doctors are just a few times that you need your original ID. It is unreasonable to request originals be mailed in, not mention the possibility of the mail being lost, damaged etc. Please relook this policy.

If you click on Step 1, you can learn what documents you can use. All submitted documents must be either originals or certified copies by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. All documents will be returned to you.

        Vonda,, I appreciate the need for originals but during this time of covid and not being able to make an appt., sending originals through the mail is unacceptable. Mail in my area is lost on a daily bases and things like drivers license and birth certificates, especially when mailed together, if stolen could be disastrous for that person. I myself am awaiting the delivery of those items. I, as suggested from my local office, even sent them with a prepaid UPS return envelope, which they did not use. I would gladly have stood at the door, but was not allowed to do so. Take copies and at a later date when offices are open allow an appt to bring those items in.
