  1. Linda B.

Hello, I plan on spending some time in another country and want to terminate my Medicare part B. I will be making an appointment and going into the SS office to speak with a representative in person. Currently, my part B is costing me 170.00 per month. My question is: after I discontinue this, how long does it take for the 170.00 part B premium to stop being taken out of my social security ?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Linda. Thanks for visiting our blog. If you wish to terminate your Medicare enrollment, we will help you submit a signed request for termination or Form CMS-1763. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires, when possible, a personal interview be conducted with everyone who wishes to terminate entitlement. Therefore, we do not offer form CMS-1763 online. Please contact your local Social Security office for assistance and for a time frame estimate. We hope this helps.

I waited 2hrs to speak to someone and I asked about cms 1763 which I had already filled out and sent. The person on the other end told me this could be done online however it cannot be done online.

  3. Michael R.

I was automatically enrolled in Medicare Part B, without my conscent. Called the 800 number for SSA to terminate Medicare and was told to download & complete form CMS1763 & and mail it in; I did. SSA now says it has “No Record” of having received the form, even thought it was sent Certified Mail & received on April 8th, 2022. I’ve now had $170.00 taken out of my SS Check for May, June, & July because they (SSA) can’t find my form to terminate. I had to go in person to complete anothe CMS1763, but that will only give me July’s Medicare payment back. I got screwed out of May & June because they have “No Record” of having received the 1st termination form. SSA processing SUCKS!

      • Sherry G.

This is exactly what happened to me. I downloaded the disenroll Medicare part B and there is no record of the mail I sent in with this paperwork plus I called in July to check on status and the employee said it was in processing? What does that mean and why and I being charged $170 when I’ve done everything I was told to do. Help me please!

        • Ann C.

This has recently happened to me also. I filled out and mailed in the form CMS1763 as I was directed by a Social Security employee. As to date no change. I haven’t been disenrolled. I have tried several times to call the SS 800 number but haven’t gotten through. What should I do next to get dis-enrolled from Medicare Part B?

      • Ann C.

Hi, Kathy. We are sorry to hear about your experience. Please contact your local Social Security office for assistance. We hope this is resolved soon.

My wife and I retired from federal services on 12/31/2021. My understanding is that we must enroll in Medicare Part B within the 8-month Special Enrollment Period to avoid any late penalties. That means we must enroll by the end of August 2022.

However, with this equitable relief of Medicare Enrollment, is our Special Enrollment Period extended to December 2022?

Can we apply for Medicare Part B enrollment by the end of December 2022?

    • Ann C.

Hi, YB.  We ask that members in our Blog community work with our offices with specific questions. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

      • Mad

This is not helpful. It is a direct question and I have the same exact situation and date of retirement. Is the equitable relief to end of 2022 real or not?

I called the 800 # and the local office today and both workers KNEW NOTHING about the extension. IS IT REAL? Why are staff not trained on it??? It is a simple question that requires a SIMPLE answer.

        • Cas

I have the exact same question. The info says you can retro enroll but when I did it was not honored. I called the local office and was told oh no, no, no we cannot retro enrollment the system won’t allow it. If coverage was requested to start in July but the form was also signed in July for instance, the coverage CANNOT start until the next month in August. What’s the deal?

    • Mad

Did you ever get an ans. to this ? I am in the exact same boat, fed worker retired on same date. I called a local office and an 800 number today and the workers both knew NOTHING about the extention….so unreal. Did you get any info.????

Your eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B at age 65.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Jayesh. Thanks for your question. Medicare eligibility usually begins at age 65. However, there are a few other ways to qualify for Medicare before age 65. You may find our Medicare page useful. We hope this helps.

    Hi SSA,

I have a disability, however, I worked in NYC and kept paying for Medicare premium. I paid the medicare premium until March 2022.
I moved from NYC to DC and I got a new full time job in January 5, 2022 and got enrolled in the new insurance from my new work in Feb 2022. I tried to called SSA at 1-800-772-1213 and called Medicare in January, had no luck. Until I got a letter from Medicare in May 2022. I called SSA again and kept waited for one hour, didn’t get through. I called Medicare and they told me to call SSA 1-800-772-1213 to disenroll the Medicare. I am pretty frustrated with the time of waiting during my work hours. Should I call local SSA in NYC to disenroll my medicare premium?
