All local Social Security offices will be closed to the public for in-person service starting Tuesday, March 17, 2020. This decision protects the population we serve—older Americans and people with underlying medical conditions—and our employees during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, we are still able to provide critical services.

Please read our press release to learn more, including how to get help from the Social Security Administration by phone and online. You can also visit our website to learn more and stay up to date.

I began collecting my SS this year at age 62 with intent of changing my full time work hours to Part time. However the pandemic occurred and as an essential worker /RN, I continued working full time. Will there be any provisions for essential workers who made more than 18,300 & collected SS, to not have to pay back the excess earned to the government?

Hi Denise, thank you for using our blog. Currently, we do not have any information to that effect. The Social Security annual earnings limits are the same for all beneficiaries. If you are under full retirement age for the entire year, then we deduct $1 from benefit payments for every $2 earned above the annual limit. For 2020, that limit is $18,240. There is a special earnings limit rule for those that retire mid-year and have already earned more than the yearly earnings limit.

The Getting Benefits While Working web page provides more details. We hope this is helpful.

hi yes I work part time making 15.15 I work 30hr week then I found out top of that every one get 25% piad with that until end . will that hurt my sddi? now I have to work 26 hr I dont understand how this work with my piad hurt my sddi income also I am blind

    • Vonda V.

Hi Todd, thank you for your question. Social Security has special rules that make it possible for people with disabilities receiving Social Security Disability (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to work and still receive monthly payments. These are called work incentives.

For SSDI beneficiaries, there is a Trial Work Period (TWP) and then an Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE). The TWP allows you to test your ability to work for at least 9 months. During this period, you will receive your full disability benefit regardless of how much you earn as long as your work activity is reported and you continue to have a disabling impairment.

Once you’ve completed your TWP, you get a 36-month safety net called the EPE. During the EPE, you get benefits for all months your earnings or work activities are below the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) level as long as you continue to have a disabling impairment. Social Security will suspend cash benefits for months earnings are over SGA and start benefits again if earnings fall below the SGA level.

Check out Social Security’s Red Book for the Special Rules for Persons who are Blind.
