“I want to provide an update to people who receive benefits from the Social Security Administration.

The Department of the Treasury (Treasury) announced on April 1 that Social Security beneficiaries who are not typically required to file tax returns will not need to file an abbreviated tax return to receive an economic impact payment. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 to generate $1,200 economic impact payments to Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

Treasury, not Social Security, will make automatic payments to Social Security beneficiaries. Beneficiaries will receive these payments by direct deposit or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their Social Security benefits.

For updates from the IRS, visit their web page.

Note for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Recipients:

We are working closely with Treasury to address outstanding questions about our SSI recipients in an attempt to make the issuance of economic impact payments as quick and efficient as possible. We realize people are concerned, and the IRS will provide additional information on their web page when available. Please note that we will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.”

We are on SS and disability and filed in 2018 and had to pay have not filed 2019 will we get ours directly deposited or will we need to go on iIRS site and put in our info to get our stimulus money

    • V.V.

Hi Sheila, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

    • V.V.

Hi Barry, thank you for using our blog. It is Treasury, not Social Security, that is making the automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. You may find the IRS Get My Payment Frequently Asked Questions web page helpful.

Danielle Bennett’s reply did not answer the question posed by the senior citizen. The senior citizen asked about social security recipients who do file tax returns. Bennet’s answered for social security recipients who do not file returns. I have the same question since I did file a return in 2018. Will I automatically, without doing anything further, get the stimulus check through direct deposit in the same account that my social security check goes to?
The IRS website explains that social security recipients who don’t file returns will get automatic Economic Income Payments deposited into their checking accounts. It does not discuss what social security recipients who do file tax returns need to do to get automatic payments.

The Department of the Treasury says Social Security recipients, including Social Security retirement, survivors benefits, and disability insurance, who don’t file tax returns should get their money by April 29

What if you’re married but separated?

      Danielle,

How do you know that? Where did they say that?

      • R C.

Answer to both, you should have already received your with the other tax filers.

      • Wanda s.

I’m SSI and irs site says that people on SSI with no dependent pendants don’t have to do anything but they already have her information from SSA that it would be deposited the same way we get our checks normally every month, either direct deposit on the card or mail checks

  10. Senior c.

Can you give me a date or some information when Social Security Recipients Who file taxes and also retired and get their money through their institution when Will the stimulus get to their account

    • R C.

If you file taxes, you should check with your preparer and see if your CoVid Economic Recovery Payment went to their bank, if you haven’t seen it in your bank account. Most people in your category have already received theirs along with other filers. The important part is to be looking in the mail for a letter from the IRS telling you where they sent your money since everyone will be sent a letter after their payment to ensure you got it.
