“I want to provide an update to people who receive benefits from the Social Security Administration.

The Department of the Treasury (Treasury) announced on April 1 that Social Security beneficiaries who are not typically required to file tax returns will not need to file an abbreviated tax return to receive an economic impact payment. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 to generate $1,200 economic impact payments to Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

Treasury, not Social Security, will make automatic payments to Social Security beneficiaries. Beneficiaries will receive these payments by direct deposit or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their Social Security benefits.

For updates from the IRS, visit their web page.

Note for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Recipients:

We are working closely with Treasury to address outstanding questions about our SSI recipients in an attempt to make the issuance of economic impact payments as quick and efficient as possible. We realize people are concerned, and the IRS will provide additional information on their web page when available. Please note that we will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.”

Hello, this is not the first time I’ve asked this question, but being referred to the Economic Impact Payment Information Center as provided in the link by Vonda did not answer my question: Do I need to do anything to verify that as the wife of an SSI recipient who filed jointly my payment will be sent with his? ( I am not old enough for SSI retirement of my own just yet.)

I have spent a LOT of time looking for the answer to this, and am hoping for help. No one wants their payment delayed because they didn’t know of some detail to take care of, and would like not to have to worry about this along with everything else we are all living through.

Hi Jean, thank you for your question. Check out the Economic Impact Payments Information Center under calculating the economic impact payment amount. For the spouse not receiving benefits, please provide information to the IRS by using the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool or by filing a federal income tax return. You must provide this additional information before your additional $1,200 payment is scheduled. Hopefully this helps.

I filed a return as I was told I needed to. I was not to add banking information because I had no tax liability. Then they changed the rules.Public was told Social Security Recipients did not have to file taxes, stimulus would be provided based on 1099. I receive Social Security and get a 1099. Now the IRS tool is telling me I am going to get a paper check. What happened to a deposit based on Social Security benefits and their having access to that information for direct deposit?

I have searched and searched on the link you provided , and haven’t found the answer to whether my payment will be with my husband’s, since he is on SSI and we filed jointly. Can you help? It feels like being left stranded when we can’t call and the Question/Answer list doesn’t address this.

Hi Sue, thank you for using our blog to ask your question. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Treasury anticipates these payments to go out to Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries starting around the end of April and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients starting in early May. Continue to check the irs.gov/coronavirus page for updates.

Hello again, “After April 24’th” is the latest from the US Treasury secretary, according to the news. Terry, I just saw a pig go flying by here!

  9. Terry V.

Here is what the clowns are now saying, ” The second wave of money could hit bank accounts as early as the week of April 20 for a group of people who receive Social Security benefits via direct deposit but may not make enough money to be required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019. Most in this group will not need to file any extra forms to receive this money. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. Please note that we will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months. Retirees who receive either Social Security retirement or Railroad Retirement benefits will also receive payments automatically.” YEA, YEA when pig’s fly too !!

Thanks for that tidbit, Steven. The rest of us have stacks of medical bills and prescriptions to fill. Aren’t you the lucky one? When I get my payment, I’m running right out and buying a tropical island, and inviting everyone else on this page to come live there for free, happily ever after. See, I get 2 trillion dollars a month from my SSDI and like Donald Trump, I’m rich, I’m really really rich!! *I’m joking, pulling your leg*
