“I want to provide an update to people who receive benefits from the Social Security Administration.

The Department of the Treasury (Treasury) announced on April 1 that Social Security beneficiaries who are not typically required to file tax returns will not need to file an abbreviated tax return to receive an economic impact payment. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 to generate $1,200 economic impact payments to Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

Treasury, not Social Security, will make automatic payments to Social Security beneficiaries. Beneficiaries will receive these payments by direct deposit or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their Social Security benefits.

For updates from the IRS, visit their web page.

Note for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Recipients:

We are working closely with Treasury to address outstanding questions about our SSI recipients in an attempt to make the issuance of economic impact payments as quick and efficient as possible. We realize people are concerned, and the IRS will provide additional information on their web page when available. Please note that we will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.”

I’m on ssi. I’m 29. I also live with my parents and pay my own bills. Problem is my dad claims me as a dependent. Should I try the irs portal for the stimulus check anyway? Why can’t we get the check anyway? I can use the money too.

    • craig

No, Your dad claimed you. you get zero. He should get 500 extra. Imo you should have him not claim you. Paying Rent means your on ur own. u just live there.

      • Colleen

No Craig, that is not correct. From all that I have read ONLY dependents under the age of 17 will receive the $500 stimulus.

  2. Harold H.

I am on SSDI and my sister is my rep payee. Will I recieve a check?

    • Jen

No ur sister will receive it

    • V.V.

Hi Harold. Thank you for your question. Economic impact payments will be made to eligible Social Security retirement, disability, or survivors beneficiaries as a direct deposit or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their benefits. We are working closely with Treasury to address outstanding questions about our SSI recipients receiving their economic impact payments. Treasury, not Social Security, will make these payments. The IRS will provide additional information at http://www.irs.gov/coronavirus.

I do not understand why Represenative Payees have a legal right to control money dispersed by the Treasury Department. It is my understanding the money managed by a payee is money from the social security Administration, aren’t these two different entities? My concern is not being allowed to access the money the way it’s intended for during a time of crisis and for economic stimulus. My payee holds on to all my funds and barely gives up $10 a month extra without it being a dire need. Should I not be allowed to go buy extra food or pay bills I am behind on like other Americans? I honestly think my Payee’s are hoping most of their clients are not smart enough to realize they are receiving a check (sounds like they would win that bet if you read most of the questions here by many confused people)…..I never once have received correspondence from them mentioning the checks and there is no mention of stimulus checks on their website. I find many complaints about representative payees across the internet and during a time of crisis it’s not beneficial to had over emergency funds to entities that are only going to block the usage of the much needed assistance.

You just need to create an account for yourself on the social security website through google search engine , I can try to find the link for you. Then you can change the location /bank that your check is sent to 🙂 all yourself. And receive it without going to them

  3. Shannin

What if you filled taxes in 2018 and we’re on SSDI what will they use for your payment I received a 1099 this year

    • V.V.

Hi Shannin.

I’m on ssa and I receive my benefit through direct express do my stimulus check go in my direct express card

  5. Terry R.

As a SSA income recipient since the last time I had to file taxes, I have adopted 2 minor grandchildren from the foster care system, will they receive payment as well ? Where does the information that they are in my care come from?

    • V.V.

Hi Terry, thank you for your question. People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about you and your qualifying children, you will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to your $1,200 individual payment. If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide information to the IRS soon, you will have to wait to receive $500 per qualifying child. We hope this helps.

  7. SUNEEK

Will SSA receive the stimulus check?

    • V.V.

Hi. Treasury, not Social Security, will make these payments. We do not have information about the schedule for these payments. The IRS will provide additional information at http://www.irs.gov/coronavirus. We hope this helps.

  8. Jennifer K.

My husband receives Social Security disability. I don’t work due to cancer treatment issues. Will I need to fill out the paperwork on the IRS website for non filers or will I be included in my husband’s stimulus payment since he will automatically receive it due to him receiving social security disability?
    Thank you for your time.

    • V.V.

Hi Jennifer, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

  9. Sherri S.

Yes I receive SSI and I get my money on my Direct Express Card and you can not use it on the IRS portal cause there is no route number with it. I don’t have a banking account but my mom or my boyfriend does. Can you tell me if I will receive it on my Direct Express or can I use one of those bank account number I mention. The IRS does not have nothing about that on the web site. Please try to explain what we need to know. Thank you for any help you can provide.

    • Kenny

I doubt if you could use one of their bank accounts since this is federal money and everything is already set up for the Direct Express Card. You may consider opening your own bank account to prevent issues like this in the future.
Since the “portal” has just come online, there’s going to be bugs that need sorted out, just keep an eye on this sight and the IRS sight for updates and issues and don’t panic.

  10. Kenny

Wow, I’m a first time visitor here and I can’t believe all the bickering.
I’ve tried several times to use the “portal” to file my son’s info to the IRS. He’s an adult, only receives SSI and has no other real income, the form is repeatedly being rejected by the IRS.
“All of the lines cannot remain blank. At least one of these lines must contain a number other than zero”, “Form 1040, line 7b, 8b, 12a, 12b, 13b, 15 or line 19”
The IRS web sight’s instructions are that you provide your ID, ssn, address… bank numbers. Nothing about income.
Is anyone else finding this issue. anyone have a solution?

    • James b.

Try using the non filers portal on irs.gov
It has worked for other people on here including me. However you cant use his direct express for direct deposit. Use pay pal or even a prepaid walmart card. You have to have routing and account numbers. There are no lines like traditional tax forms.
It’s a very easy 10 minute form just basically name address income ss# and bank info . Hope this helps

      • Kenny

I was using the irs.gov sight ( non-filers: Enter Payment Here ). Took me to freefilefillableforms.com , created an account then it brought up a the standard 2 page Form1040. I tied just entering his name, ssn, address..etc, banking info with no amounts entered on any line. It was rejected three times by the IRS.
Id like to see what form your mentioning that doesn’t have any Lines to fill in.

        • Kenny

Apologies, I started completely over and found my mistake, chose the wrong form. Thank you for your advise.
