“I want to provide an update to people who receive benefits from the Social Security Administration.

The Department of the Treasury (Treasury) announced on April 1 that Social Security beneficiaries who are not typically required to file tax returns will not need to file an abbreviated tax return to receive an economic impact payment. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 to generate $1,200 economic impact payments to Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

Treasury, not Social Security, will make automatic payments to Social Security beneficiaries. Beneficiaries will receive these payments by direct deposit or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their Social Security benefits.

For updates from the IRS, visit their web page.

Note for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Recipients:

We are working closely with Treasury to address outstanding questions about our SSI recipients in an attempt to make the issuance of economic impact payments as quick and efficient as possible. We realize people are concerned, and the IRS will provide additional information on their web page when available. Please note that we will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.”

I can’t believe honestly they say some people have money when literally NO ONE on my Facebook knows anyone who has

I’ve read a bunch of mixed reports about social security

Like we get our deposits first, then we get them ten days after the first batch

I wanna know how they decided who’s to send out first

    • DAB

Assuming the news reports — pretty much all of them — are accurate, the order is pretty much in terms of income and banking information. The first batch goes out to the lowest income group who filed taxes and have direct deposit information, and then so on. This is followed by SS and SSDI recipients (the words the IRS used were “followed shortly by…” This is likely taking place after the taxpayers because the IRS already has the taxpayer information but has to coordinate with the SSA to get information for people under their auspices. The SSI isn’t clear, but I suspect they will be next, the last of the direct deposit groups, because the IRS will still have to vet people who used their portal to input information. This is just a guess, though.

Next, the paper checks go out because it’s a lot more labor-intensive to print them up and mail them out. The order will likely stay the same for taxpayers, but it’s unclear how the SS people will be handled. My guess is they will be done alongside the taxpayers this time because they will already have the SS information from the direct deposit round.

As I said, some of it — the parts where I said so — is conjecture, but this is the best and most recent information available. We should know more once the IRS sets up their tracking site in a few days. Then we’ll be able to see where we stand in our own situation. It’s really the only thing that matters unless you care about the order more than the actual date you’ll get it, and there’s no reason to do so.

I claim my 91 year old grandma on my taxes because I take care of her and the bills she can’t afford, she gets SS, since I claim her will she get the $1200?

  6. lorna

Hi I have a question if you receive benefits through your direct express card SSI will you receive the stimulus payment the same way and if not is joint account ok to use for direct deposit?

    • Tammie M.

Do you know if you will get it on your card

  7. Edward S.

I get ssi but I have a payee.and the card is in my moms name. Will I still get the 1200

    • Kds

If your mom claims you as a dependent on her taxes, no you will not.. however, if she doesn’t claim you.. you will get something.. and it’s paid the same way you receive your ss check.

  8. Earnest K.

My AGI is usually less than $50,000 per year in the past years. So, I would be eligible for the $1,200. HOWEVER, in 2019, I received my SSDI backpay for the past 3-years. Which puts my AGI for 2019 quite a bit over $100,000….only for 2019. So, basically my 2020 and future AGI will be much less.
Since the Economic Impact Payment is based on my 2019 AGI, does that mean I am not eligible only because I received the SSDI lump sum in 2019?

    • V.V.

Absolutely Chaps my Ass with this Child Support Crap….Intercepting Emergency Relief Funds!!!! “Another Great Subject Matter of Putting anyone and everyone named “Non Custodial” In the same Big Dead beat barrel….. If we were to take a consensus vote based off of whats the right thing to do when it comes to paying child support. I would imagine most would agree, Its a No Brainer “Pay for your kids” I totally agree. Im just pissed off and frustrared with the fact that the Government is too lazy to seperate the Good from the Bad and the Ugly. For instance, Lets put the Dead beats that owe $25,000 in the same bucket as the $1200 parent that works for a living pays child support, fell just slightly behind due to shortage of work hours. Has recently had their Income Tax refund taken and now this “EMERGENCY RELIEF” check taken as well!!!! Straight BS. I ask you, Is it fair to starve, deprive and penalize the trying and put them alongside the careless deadbeats and pass down the same sentences. And Furthermore, Does Momma or Single Dad really honestly need (2 )Income Tax Checks and (2) Stimulus Checks within a 1 month period!!!!! OVERKILL OVERKILL
WE ALL ARE HURTING RIGHT NOW AND ALL NEED SOME HELP…… Apparantly The Congress gives 2 shits about parents a little behind on Child Support. But, wanna make sure people that dont work for a living, owe federal taxes, student loans etc,,,etc. “PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE AND O.K TO FALL A LITTLE BEHIND IN THAT THOUGH ? “Im not by any means saying “People shouldnt be obligated to paying for their kids” My point is SIMPLY IN RELATION TO THEM HIJACKING THESE EMERGENCY FUNDS” That the other parent will be getting already their own funds….Does it really really seem necessary….
