people at a Fourth of July cookoutEvery July, we take pride in celebrating our nation’s independence. For nearly 90 years, our programs have helped provide financial independence to millions of hardworking people. We have useful online tools like the Social Security Statement (Statement) and our benefits estimator tool that help people not yet receiving benefits. The Statement shows the benefits that you and your family may be entitled to with personalized fact sheets tailored to your age and earnings situation. The benefits estimator tool allows you to get estimates based on different ages you want to begin receiving benefits. These tools can help you plan the financial independence you deserve in retirement.

Don’t receive benefits? You can get the most out of your online experience if you have a personal my Social Security account. You can:

  • Get your Statement instantly.
  • Request a replacement Social Security card (in nearly every state and the District of Columbia).
  • Find out if you qualify for benefits.
  • Appeal a decision we made on your claim.

Already receiving benefits? If so, you can use your personal my Social Security account to:

Can I use my email address, home address & my phone number to create a ‘my social security’ account so my adult son can apply for Soc. Sec. Disability or SSI? He does not have computer or phone. His mailing address is my home address & his contact phone is my phone number. He does have his own apartment, but mail security is an issue there. Thank you for your help, Kathie Ratigan

Hi. Thanks for visiting our blog. Unfortunately, you can only create a my Social Security account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create or use an account on behalf of another person, even if you have that person’s written permission. If your son is at least 18 years of age, he can create his own account. Hope this helps.

What’s the newest full retirement age now? Seems to keep changing so naturally I’m curious to know. Thanks!

    • Ann C.

Hi, Debra. Thanks for visiting our blog. Your full retirement age is determined by your year of birth. You can check out our Retirement Planner: Retirement Age Calculator to understand why some people have different full retirement ages. We hope this helps.

will seniors get a raise in social security this year?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Barbara. Thanks for your question. We will not know if there will be a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2023, and if so the amount of the COLA, until the Department of Labor releases information on inflation for the past year. For the latest news and updates on Social Security, please check out our webpage. We hope this helps.

I dont know how people are suppose to make it anymore, food and gas prices are so high, that we cant afford to do anything. My daughter is 14 year old and we have never got to take her on vacation. I got my disability this year because I am no longer able to work, and my daughter gets a check cause she is down syndrome, well when I got my check, they cut her check. So tell me what we are suppose to do and they also took my snap benefits. I am so depressed that i dont eat half the time, and i have to fight the filling of wanting to sleep 24/7.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Nancy. We are sorry to hear about your situation. You may be eligible to receive social services from the state in which you live. These services include free meals, housekeeping help, transportation, or help with other problems. To get information about services in your area and find out if you qualify, you will need to contact your state or local social services or welfare office. We hope this helps.

Am I the only one asking Social Security how the heck are we supposed to enjoy the Fourth of July on what you give seniors? Plus, you give an increase and Medicare takes a chunk of it. Nope, am voting Red now!

People are not financially independent. They rely to much on the government for assistance.

Many are relying on pandemic rental assistance or other rental assistance. When these grant money run out, they will be homeless in the street.

The federal reserve made it easy for investors to borrow low interest home loans and charge renters very high rent. Many cannot even buy or rent a home. Investor are also flipping home driving up the prices in poor neighborhoods they don’t even live in. The housing affordability crisis was caused by the federal reserve.

Do you know why real estate agens and agencies are disacriminating against low income people for apartments. I have been homeless for a year, when I apply they say I need to make three times more income, there is no place on the application for benefit information and they take your application fee without you completing your application. Thank you Tony

    • Anna

If you vote RED you won’t get anything. Not even a dime. The GOP is planning to slash the SS entirely.

    • William B.

If you think the Republicans are going to help the poor you are sadly mistaken.Voting red will get us less not more.
