We have exciting news to share: we’ve redesigned your Social Security Statement (Statement) to make it easier to find the information you need.

Who gets a Statement?

A Statement is available to any adult worker who does not receive benefits. Your unique Statement gives estimates of future Social Security benefits that you and your family may receive each month along with a basic overview of the Social Security program. It also provides a record of your earnings history and other valuable information. Your future benefits are based on your earnings record, so it’s important to tell us when you see an error, so you can get it corrected and ensure you get all the benefits you earned. Your Statement explains how to report an error.

What’s New in the Statement?

The redesigned Statement is streamlined and written in plain language to make it easy to read, use, and understand. We’ve divided the information into sections, like different types of benefits, so you can easily find what you need. The new Statement provides a bar chart with your personalized retirement benefit estimates for up to nine different ages, depending on when you may want your benefits to start. This key information can help you make educated decisions about your financial future.

Fact sheets tailored to your age group and earnings situation accompany your online Statement. The fact sheets can help you better understand Social Security programs, benefits, and how they fit your situation. For example, for younger workers, we provide more information about how you can save for your future; for older workers, we explain how benefits may be taxed and how to avoid a Medicare penalty. We include links in the fact sheets for easier reference and additional information.

Our Social Security Statement web page has samples of the Statement, as well as copies of the new fact sheets (in English and Spanish). Please share these resources with your friends and family.

How about those people that do NOT own a printer or a computer, will those Social Security statements be mailed if requested?

What about those of who do receive Social Security retirement benifts, my entire working adult life I paid into Social Security, will those statements be mailed to us?

Last, will somebody from Social Security be addressing the comments and/or answering our questions or is the comment section ment only for people to vent?

    • Vonda

Hi Virginia, thanks for using our blog. For workers age 60 and older who do not have a my Social Security account, we currently mail Social Security Statements three months prior to their birthday. Check out our Social Security Statement web page for more details. We hope this is helpful.

As an American citizen living overseas and receiving social security benefits, it would nice to see & get the new statements, but I can’t because, if still true, U.S. citizens living overseas are not allowed to create a mySocialSecurity account. When will this seemingly basic function be available for overseas social security recipients? Thank you.

    • Vonda

Hi Ron, thanks for using our blog. Unfortunately, at this time you must have a U. S. mailing address to create or access your online account. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.

We recommend that individuals living outside the United States contact the nearest Federal Benefit Unit in the area for any assistance related to Social Security programs and benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad.

I would like to know the process to get benefits to my wife. I was told that I need to be married for at least 3 years. I have been married 7 years. Please let me know what should I do, I am 72 yrs old and she is 67 yrs old.

    • Vonda

Hi Jose. Thanks for using our blog. We will always pay your own retirement benefit first. If your benefits as a spouse are higher than your own retirement benefits, you will get a combination of benefits equaling the higher spouse benefit. However, the spouse’s benefit cannot exceed one-half of your wife’s full retirement amount (not her reduced benefit amount). So, you can only receive additional spouse’s benefits if your own full retirement benefit (not your reduced benefit) is less than half of your wife’s full retirement benefit.

Generally, during the initial interview when applying for Social Security benefits, we typically explore all other benefits that could yield you a higher benefit amount. To find out if you are eligible for a higher benefit amount, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information.  Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

  8. Paul

I don’t see any spot on the web site to get the statement. I am getting spousal benefits so I only see this info but not info on my benefit.

    • Vonda

Hi Paul, thanks for using our blog. If you’re already receiving benefits and need a retirement estimate, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information.  Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

NOTE: The new Social Security Statement pdf file does not open up and print on the social security website.

However, all the other pdf files on the social security website do open up and can be printed.

I have a government pension. Do not get social security, although I paid into it. Im regulated by public pension offset. So my Medicare is under my late husbands SS #. I would like that changed to my number so my Medicare can be taken out of my pension rather than out of my checking account. Please see if this can be done.

    • Vonda
