With so many services available online through my Social Security, signing up for a secure account will help you conduct Social Security business from home.

With your personal my Social Security account, you can:

  • Estimate your future benefits and compare different dates or ages to begin receiving benefits.
  • Check the status of your Social Security application.
  • Review your work history.
  • Request a replacement Social Security card (in most States).

If you already receive benefits, you can also:

  • Get a benefit verification or proof of income letter.
  • Set up or change your direct deposit.
  • Change your address.
  • Request a replacement Medicare card.
  • Get a Social Security 1099 form (SSA-1099).

You can even use your personal my Social Security account to opt out of receiving certain notices by mail, such as the annual cost-of-living adjustments and the income-related monthly adjustment amount notice.  Instead, through the Message Center you can receive secure, sensitive communications.

How can I print an “Award Letter” for House Loan Modification? Is it the same as the Benefit Verification Letter?

    • Vonda

Hi Fernando, thanks for using our blog. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page for details on how to get a benefit verification letter. This letter is sometimes called a budget letter, a benefits letter, a proof of income letter or a proof of award letter. You also may be able to request a benefit verification letter by using our automated telephone service at 1-800-772-1213. You can conduct the automated services 24 hours a day. At the prompt, indicate that you’re requesting a proof of income letter. We hope this helps.

My 80 y.o. mother received an envelope from SSA with a letter stating “You recently contacted the SSA and requested … Your Social Security Number and Card”.

The envelope included an SS-5 Application.

Her first and last names were spelled incorrectly on the letter, but her address was correct. She did NOT place any calls to SSA and does not need this info.

Other than NOT returning the form, is there anything we should be worried about? Is someone trying to hack her ID?? If so, do we need to take other precautions?
    Thanks

    • Vonda

I would like to check if a friends’son, born in Houston has a social security number, as they live overseas?
    I have the person name.
    Where online should I check?

    • Vonda V.

Hi Gilberto. Because of privacy and security concerns, you cannot inquire about a person’s Social Security number. Because your friend resides outside the United States, they can contact their nearest Federal Benefits Unit for assistance. Thanks.
