Faxed documents do not receive any acknowledgement from SSA. There are no checkboxes on the mysocialsecurity accounts to show requested documents are received or not. Mail sent in SSA envelopes sre not allowed to have tracking (as per USPS). Accounts have both email and phone numbers but neither is used in correspondence from workers so it takes a month to receive additional or original document requests. It would be quicker to email pdf documentation, but SSA (inefficiently) does not allow that. If those were a simple email and phone call could settle a case in a total of 10 to 15 minutes!

SSA already uses the email to alert messages and the phone number to send security codes. Why not add these as ways to process?

One thing that cannot be done online is submit an IRS Form W-4V. According to this web site the form must be mailed or hand delivered to the local Social Security Office. Since those offices are closed indefinitely because of Covid-19, the only available method is to send them by postal mail.

I mailed in forms for my wife and myself in March 2020 (more than a year ago). About six months later I called my local office because no taxes were yet being withheld. The person who answered the phone was unable to help, and forwarded my call to another employee’s voice mail. No one ever called me back.

We now owe federal taxes on our 2020 Social Security payments. Withholding is supposed to eliminate this problem.

Can you help us? Thank you.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Bob. We are sorry to hear about your experience and situation. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We ask that members in our Blog community to continue to work with our offices with specific questions. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. Generally, you will have a shorter wait if you call later in the day. You can also contact your local Social Security office. You can ask to speak to a supervisor on your next call. We hope this is resolved soon.

My son is my caregiver 24/7. Can he get compensated? It’s like a full time job, as I have mobility issues.

    • Vonda

Thanks for your question, Rose. We do not pay caregivers. However, you may be eligible to receive social services from the state in which you live. These services include free meals, housekeeping help, transportation, or help with other problems. You can get information about services in your area from your state or local social services office. You can also visit the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services web page for more information. Thanks.

When are us on disability going to get our stimulus. We are one of the groups that need it most. Why is it taking so long?

    • Vonda

Hi Misty, thanks for using our blog. If you receive Social Security or SSI benefits, you may receive your payment sooner, or later, than another beneficiary you know because the IRS is sending payments first to anyone who filed a tax return or used its Non-Filer Tool to receive a previous payment.

The IRS has not determined when it will begin issuing payments to Social Security and SSI beneficiaries who did not file a 2020 or 2019 tax return or used its Non-Filer Tool to receive a previous payment. Use the IRS’ Get My Payment Tool to see when you can expect to receive your payment once determined by the IRS.

I never changed the name on my s.s. card from my maiden name to my married name when I got married 50 years ago ,will it matter at any time that it was not changed ?

    • Vonda

Hi Rita, thanks for using our blog. The Social Security number (SSN) was created for the sole purpose of tracking the earnings histories of U.S. workers for use in determining Social Security benefit entitlement and computing benefit levels. That’s why it’s critical that the name and number on your Social Security card agree with your employer’s payroll records and W-2 so that we can credit your earnings to your record. It is up to you to make sure that both our records and your employer’s records are correct.

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page on how to change your name. All submitted documents must be either originals or certified copies by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.

For additional information on how Social Security can help with your Social Security number, please visit our Social Security and Coronavirus web page.
