It’s ironic that this blog entry about using my Social Security comes out on a weekend that the my Social Security site is down! I have been trying to log on since yesterday morning – it was down then and is still down today! It can be a helpful site, so hopefully it will be working again soon.

We can not sign into our account. Just get a browser error. I get this no matter what browser I use, which ip address I use, clearing browser cache etc. the sign in just is not working. Any ideas why that is or when it will be fixed?

DEAR SSA, I FORGOT MY MIDDLE TWO NUMBERS OF MY SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. HOW CAN I REQUEST THEM?

    • Celia

Ask your employer or bank. Look at your past tax returns…

    • Vonda

Hi Arturo, thank you for using our blog. First, realize you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing your Social Security number is what is important. However, if you must get a replacement card, you may be able to apply online. Visit our Social Security Number and Card page to learn how. If you cannot request a replacement card online, call your local office and request that we mail you an SSN printout instead of a replacement Social Security card. Unfortunately, we are unable to process replacement Social Security card requests by phone at this time.

I have not been able to log into the my Social Security site all day.
My 1099 for income tax filing has not arrived by mail, and I hoped to get this information online today so I can do my taxes. That is my last hold-up to getting my tax filed.

    • Celia

It’s up to the postal service to deliver the 1099.
The IRS isn’t accepting 2020 tax filings yet.
      Chill out!!

    • Vonda

Hi Philip. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page on how to obtain a replacement 1099. You also may be able to request a replacement SSA-1099 by using our automated telephone service at 1-800-772-1213. You can conduct the automated services 24 hours a day. At the prompt, indicate that you’re requesting a replacement SSA-1099. We hope this helps.

    Dear SSA,
Why can’t I find any information about the WEP and GPO on your site? I did a search and couldn’t find one article on these horrible laws that steal retirement from those most in need. If you have more information, please share it openly so people can plan and be aware of the problems.
    Thank you,
    David Milroy

    • Celia

Type in WEP, GPO on the search function on the SSA website. More than enough info on both.

    • Vonda

Hi David, thanks for using our blog. A non-covered pension, a pension based on work that is not covered by Social Security (for example, Federal civil service and some State or local government agencies such as police officers and some teachers), may cause the amount of your Social Security benefit to be reduced. Your benefit can be reduced based on one of two provisions: The Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision. See our Information for Government Employees web page for details.

SSA hypes me up about returning to work after taking SSR at 62 saying my entitlement will be recalculated and may increase my monthly check, WRONG! Turns out they have a fail-safe, built-in computation that almost guarantees your check won’t increase! But, they still make you pay in to SSA and Medicare.

    • Celia

If benefits are with held for some months between 62 and your full retirement age(FRA), then SSA will do a recalculation of your benefit after you reach the FRA month.
      You just have to wait!!

  9. Rick T.

Does SSA have plan to securely upload documents when using my Social Security account? If I understand correctly, current options are phone, fax or to schedule in-person meeting via appointment.
